I'm no expert but i have just formatted my desktop pc , think you might have to install a video player like PowerDVD, WinDVD,also make sure you have downloaded all the codecs as well

Jeez,

Install a codec pack.
If you go fopr the K-Lite pack, you only need the 'Standard Pack' from the link above, just click the download button then on the next page click one of the Standard Pack downloads.

Did you reinstall the drivers for the DVD/CD Player?
If not go to Device manager:

How to access Device Manager in Windows XP

How to access Device Manager in Windows Vista

How to access Device Manager in Windows 7

Once you have opened Device Manager, double click the DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Double click (Whatever name)- DVD/CD ROM Device
Click the Driver tab
Click Update Driver.

What operating system do you have, XP or Vista?

Which version of Windows Media Player do you have?
To find out: Open Media Player, click on the Help, then About. That will tell you which version you have.

Before you install the Klite codecs, have a look at the VLC PLayer, it comes with its own codecs and is a good video player complete.

Then when you have considered the VLC Player versus the K-Lite Codec pack, choose one and download.
Then let us know which and if it works.
