If you reformat it, you will lose everything on that partition or drive.

If you can boot up, either normal or in safe mode, you can use Recuva. It is free and it might just find any lost files.

hi, ummm there are multiple ways of retrieving data from damaged/corrupt hard drive but lets just see if we can correct this error first.

What operating system are you currently running?
Can you post the entire error with any error codes please
As dave said reformatting it will remove all data from your hard drive so DONT reformat...:P

If you have a bad sector it means that some blocks are damaged, if you follow the instructions it will quarantine the bad sector, allowing you to back up all the information you want to keep, either using a remote hard drive or memory stick.

Once have save the information you will need a new hard drive, and then transfer the data back.

You can live with the bad sectors if they are not taking up much space on your hard drive. The thing is to try and retrieve the data that was on the bad sector before it was damaged. Once that is done, Windows will put 'traffic cones' around the bad sector so that the OS does not write anymore data to that part of the disk. So it is safe to use again, BUT it is advisable to replace the HD at the earliest opportunity as a bad sector is an indication that the disk is on the way out.

Come back with the info about your computer that Luke asked for so that we can advise what to do next.
