ply kitchen doors

hey folks

i am replacing the horrible kitchen doors because the lam finish on the MDF is peeling off...
the hinges are staying as i intend to cut new doors and hinge hole cutter them and screw them onto hinges.

now i have seen kitchens with ply doors and love the look of them... the question is that i know from experience with making ply wardrobe doors that shuttering ply doesn't have the hold between the ply layers to hold when cut...
what would the best type of ply to use... it will take approx 2.5 sheets of ply and the budget is max 50euro(£40) per sheet
any idea, advise or past experiences would be great thanks

It depends on what you want as there is a good range of hardwood veneered boards but they are mostly in MDF for the thicker boards. If you wanted a plain finish then you need birch faced cabinet quality ply but I feel this would look a bit insipid just varnished over. Cabinet grade ply is a very stable board and you can machine it for making drawers etc. It sounds like you are not in the UK but my local wood yard 18mm is around £30 a sheet from memory.

shuttering ply is the cheapest carp used for one or two uses at shuttering[formers for concrete walls/bases]

you need 15 or 18mm ply as 12mm the hinge hole will break the surface

yes its 15/18mm ply i want.. but the finish is not overly important as it will be staind

anyone ever seen WPB chinese ply?

I should imagine it is shite. The best quality I have found to be is Finnforest products.

If you are getting WPB ply then you need to make sure it is Far eastern ply and not cheap crap. Travis Perkins is a good place to get it, a little dearer but it is top quality.
