Tiling a shower ! and want to make my own base ! help !!!
Hi all
Im new to the forum, but hope to be here for the long haul, got loadsa projects an DIY for the future....
But to my current conudrum, please forgive me being a complete novice an noob to some of the following matters.
Im wanting to re tile our shower, and am not completely sure what options are out there, I am going to be doing all the work myself, hence I was looking for a form of boarding that was waterproof/resistant but that could be tiled onto directly, as i can manage tiling but have no plastering skills, but thinking of it now! im not sure do you even plaster or skim a shower wall b4 tiling normally.
Ive seen something in B&Q call aquaboard or summat , tile backer boardd it says, Is this the stuff I need ????
onto the next thing, and the more daunting prospect is that i am going to make and tile my own shower base, by replacing the double aycrilic one we have now !
Now I think i have the theory down, from reading a few articuls online, and some youtube vids....lol ( thou most were American vids )
Id really appreciate being pointed in the right direction on specific products
from what I have got so far, 1st I need some form of membrane to cover my floor boards from soaking the moisture of the 1st motar bed, while also incorperating the shower trap/waste, 2nd then for the waterproof layer, that im unsure of what exactly will do or where to buy ? followed by the final mortar layer than must be sloped
towards the waste, then for the tiling.
I make it sound so simple dont ai. I have a habit of deluding myself like this.
please oh please I need to be put straight, any advice or what specifc products or places to go would be great
I will be most eternally grateful for all comments and advice !!

my opinion...don't bother even attempting to make your own shower tray..
that has to be beyond 99% of pro's..
and yes do use aqua-panel

Someone i know did make their own shower base from fibreglass. He has a boat so has used fibreglass to repair things.
Haven't seen him for a while but remember him saying it was fine.

google Marmox, they do preformed trays for tiling over and backer boards, just a word of caution these types of shower enclosures are NOT for the faint hearted, you will need a tanking membrane also!
try schluter and homelux on google also!
good luck

Re: Tiling a shower ! and want to make my own base ! help !!
imo if you havent much experience of tile fixing, then making your own former is a no..no..
you have to many things to take into consideration..
it has to take a min of weight..i.e..X amounts of KG
the fall/gradient to the grate has to be a certain mm..(min 14mm-..mm)
the size you wish to make..
the water flow rate from the shower..how many litres per minute, you dont want the water ponding to much and running over the former..and into your hall..
the list is quite endless as above buy one,but when doing this, take the above into consideration..

woooow ! thank you all for the response !
that was quick.......
Oh dear ! it dont sound good doing your own tray, but i can be bull headed a little, it look so easy in the videoas i watched online....lol
famous last words....
I just really didnt want a preformed one, dont get me wrong, im no toff, but were laying out for a nice bath suite, nice slipper stand alone bath, and wanted to go the extra bit with the tray, i know this probably sounds daft, but how much could i expect to pay to get some one in just to do the tray ????
again, thanks all of you for your comments, really appreciate it people

Re: Tiling a shower ! and want to make my own base ! help !!
woooow ! 2k, im half way to that now, just dont want to think about it, when you say brought in your own tray ?????
i just want to replace what ive assumed is a standad size but in a double. id say a 1000x600
http://www.heatandplumb.com/acatalog/Ma ... aign=Feed1
ok ! above is a marmox shower tray, but what im not completely sure on, is how you go about making your, kerb, and being flat is that more trouble to seal where the 3 side of the shower meet the bottom, as opposed to putting your own waterproof membrand down but over lapping it and having it come up the frame of the walls, if that makes sense ???

Wetroom...don't DIY unless you really really know what you are doing...
btw "Bought in" Not "Brought"
tried to post a pic for you then realised it's on my old, slightly decomposed lap-top..

Re: Tiling a shower ! and want to make my own base ! help !!
the actual trays are not that dear bout 100 nicker for a 1200x900 but then you do have to buy the drain outlets and membrane, tiles, addys, backerboards and so on and so on, £2000 on materials isnt expensive at all, done a couple of bathrooms where people have spent £750 on a toilet!!!!!! was nice to sit though
