Looking for some advice.

Post by Rex81 »

Ok, I have a little project planned and need some advice.

I am trying to create some storage space under my bed. With my tiny room its the only space thats not already being used!

Because it's a bed with draws in the bottom, it means raising the whole bed! So I need to create a staging of sorts which the bedframe will sit on. The staging will be as long as the room (2740mm Approx) as wide as the bed and prob sit about 300mm from the floor.

Now I thought a basic frame with an MDF top should do the trick, struts at halfway points for added strength etc. My main problems are what type and size of wood I should use for the main structure. Its got take the bed its cargo of me, mattress, the draws full of clothes etc. So its got to be strong.

Also any ideas for the doors at the front would be appreciated too! The space is for boxes and the such so there is no need for draws or anything like that, just a big open space.

heeelllooo Rex81 and welcome

i have done several conversion /adaptions /modification of beds

now in general construction dependant on the height you want to raise the bed the total height from mattress to floor and the sort/construction of the bed

the last divan i raised they wanted 8 inches clearence for plastic boxes so no need for assistance getting out and in the bed

so i made up 2"H" sections [1 bit at the end and middle with another bit running up centraly between them]from 9" new scaffold boards standing up on there sides with a 8mm dowel sticking up to locate into the hole where i removed the wheels from
very simple very effective solid and relativly cheap
this gives you 2 half depth half width drawers each side

building a platform is completly unnesesery as you only need support where the wheels or legs are

things you need to keep in mind if space is tight your better with 2 x1ft deep boxes than 1x2ft box that you can't get out or get into because where your standing or the wall gets in the way
and any doors are likely to get in the way would suggest a simple bit of 6mm ply half bed length where the central support is with 2 hook on brackets to hold them on

Man so much easier than my idea. Better too.

Unfortunatly one side of the bed is against the wall so if I had two "H" sections I could only use two out of the four possible storage ares.

Thanks for the help, think I will modify your idea slightly to get what I need. This only being phase one of the works I expect I will be back for more advice. Thanks Again.

because scaffold boards are very chunkey you will probably get away with the bit at the back as a "U" section you just have to make shure its firmly located either with the dowels or the spindles that may be left sticking out the bed when you pull the wheels off
