Fitting new bathroom suite - Tile before or after fitting ba

Post by bilabonic »

hi

Do i tile walls before i fit the bath/shower ? Do i need to go below the lip of the bath or do i tile later onto it ??

Same with shower, i need to stud out a section just for this to fit pipes behind. How do i go about it ??

Cheers

Your bath will need fixing to the wall..unless freestanding...

I'd be looking at tiling After fitting the bath.(and no point tiling under the bath if it's fitted properly)
..but before fitting the shower..

With baths I always tile to a batten about 3/4 tile height above the bath, then fit the bath, half fill with water, silicone between the bath and the wall, then tile down to the bath leaving a couple of mill gap for a nice neat silicone finish.

With showers I always fit the tray first and the pipework for the mixer (capped off) then tile, then fit the enclosure, mixer, riser etc.

as fred has said fit bath to wall/walls with brackets fill and seal, leave overnight.
as for battens.. yes you can use these.. but only if your "not" tanking your "wet areas"

as for the studding out measure where your pipe feed is coming thro onto ur plasterboard/backerboard and cut hole out with stanley blade/core cutter.

for tiling get the bath LEVEL..then mark out your wall for tile fixing..at least half a tile running off the top of bath, but check cuts onto floor and up at ceiling and corners, if not happy with size of cuts, then adjust vertical and horizontal lines on wall/walls.

Awesome info guys, would never of thought of filling bath for it to settle. It is a standard bath not freestanding.

So just leave enough room to fit a 3/4 tile at bath, i was going to just put a full tile at bath edge and tile up, i am not going all way to ceiling, just partial tiling wet areas inc above sink etc.

Cheers

Also the bath suit has an option for steel or acrylic bath, which is better peeps ????

It is for rented accom and the screfix suite for £180 !!

Acrylic, will probably end up with fag burns etc, and steel will end up chipped.

Never install a bath if you intend to let.

The bathroom is very big and will empty without one though. I have a 1200mm corner shower as well.

If it was my choice I would go for the steel bath, they will last a bit longer.

Cheers guys i have ditched the tiles as i have come across a cheap lot of the 25cm plastic panel (4 in pack)

So i fit bath first and panel to top of bath. Rather than run panel on wall behind bath then fit bath later ?

Yes that way you can seal the bath, fit the panels and give the bath a second seal.

I would go for plastic, mainly as if it gets damaged you can keep deposit and get a new plastic bath for under £30, easy to fit and remove.

Steel baths are a pain in the arse and even if they get damage will be even more of a pain to re-fit.

fit the bath first to the wall make sure you spread the weight on 2 boards under feet, half fill bath with water, silicone around the bath, then tile and silicone around bath again, this gives you 2 water barriers, do the same for the shower.

I would agree with what was said before but I also always use a bath sealing strip behind the last tile over the bath or shower tray.
