Slow computers
Mates computer almost came to a standstill, after about an hour, it jumped into life and goes like a good en again.
Since done a defrag, and system clean.
Would Skype have anything to do with it, it's in the start up, and is there an easy way he can switch it on and off.

Re: Slow computers
Skype might be an issue but you'd think it would be a constant problem if it's that.
Go to start > run.
Type msconfig and press Enter.
Click the Startup tab and remove the tick next to unnecessary programs.
Restart and see if it improves things.
Just go to All Programs > Skype when he wants to use it.

Re: Slow computers
Is his computer always slow for around an hour every time it starts? Has he got AV, or anti spyware set to do a scan everytime he starts Windows?

Re: Slow computers
Avast and MBam.
It's always slow to start but never this bad.
When I turned it on, it took 30mins ish to start IE
Running 98se by the way.
Managed to do a speed test eventually it was 3500 ish can't remember the other one.

In the selective start up.
Process system ini
Progress win.ini file
Load system services
Load start up items
Use original boot ini
Inside the start up there's a load of names I have no idea what they do.

Re: Slow computers
I meant just remove unnecessary programs.Don't have an unnecessary programs box.
Didn't realise it was Windos 98.
Most of the stuff under startup can probably be removed, apart from the antivirus.
Problem with Win98 is that programs to help like Windows Startup Inspector don't often work.
You could try downloading it from here

Re: Slow computers
Try Startup Inspector from my link. Click Analyse and it checks its online database and tells you what's safe to remove from startup.
