Over the last year or so its become very apparent the recession is affecting crime rates and burglary. Worse still i have noticed burglary is changing along with a big increase.

PLEASE PLEASE if you just pop out anywhere during the day lock up FULLY. ive been to a break in every day this week and all were during the day and each time they got in because the doors werent locked properly or windows left open.

7 have happened in the last week in my surrounding roads and all during the school run time as they know the house is empty for an hour or so.Most years it gets like this when the clocks change but this year its different due to the economic climate.

Also be aware insurance assesors are more clued up these days and if your locks dont meet YOUR insurers standards they dont pay out especially if they werent in use when you got burgled.

The latest standard for mortice locks is BS 3621-2004, if your lock meets this standard it will say so on the face plate.


Im amazed at the amount of breakins i go to because the victims didnt think it would happen to them,some are in a right state too.

The moral is ASSUME IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU and lock up everytime you leave the house.

After while it gets to you seeing victim after victim of burglary so had to get it off my chest even though it keeps me in work.

I notice in the police action programmes that when they try to break into a house, the rozzers have more trouble with plastic doors than wooden ones.

Anyway, they never try the door to see if it's unlocked first. Would be a pity to miss the fun of bashing a door in eh?

If you have a upvc fully lock it if you go out, being to loads of breakins where they only get left on the latch making for a very easy entry with a screwdriver.

Not as secure as you think but generally insurance rated if it has 5 point locking. Take a look on google for euro lock snapping and you will see why i say that.

My mate is a copper but used to be a locksmith. on a raid he opened the door so quick before they battered it with the enforcer that they all just stood there gawping in disbelief at how quick it was instead of running into the property.In the end they had 7 fully kitted up old bill in the drug dealers lounge before he even got out of his chair lol.

I guess a burglar alarm is also an essential piece of kit as well as decent locks.

if you fit an alarm, then make sure you fit internal sirens too, most don't. if somebody is goign to break in, a pro won't be bothered by anything so i work on the principle i am going to deafen the retards if they do break in.

Lockie... that's really good advice. I always lock my door properly when I go out. I live on the first floor and I often leave my windows (old sash ones) open a little bit... because otherwise my cat would cook in the heat!! None of them have locks on, so I only leave the windows at the front of the property open because it's a busy road and someone would see if a burgular tried to get in at the front.

What can I do to make the windows more secure? Because I'd really like to leave more of them open when I go out.

Eek...glad I read this Replaced a Euro lock in our plastic back door last year after the original broke. Can you recommend a "proper" lock that's worth fitting please?

Got two dogs....although one is a bit on the small side Also got an alarm...but I'd rather miscreants didn't get though the door in the first place.

Get an alarm on it, a really loud one.

I would still get an alarm fitted even if you have a buzzer indoors, so you can practice your baseball swing.

had my shed done three times now, first time they got my chain saw, so no more tools left in there.
the second they got 12 1 way consumer units and a drum of 6mm, not an easy thing to run down the street with.
the last time they took 6 bundles of copper.

i read on another forum about someone who put gripper strip along the top of his fence & was rewarded in finding some skin on it one morning, he was told to remove it or he could be prosecuted

I went up the club on night, and there was blood all over the front door. someone good tangled up with the razor wire on the roof.
