Re: dont know where to start
Start - Run
type "msconfig" in the box (without the quotes) and ENTER
Click on the 'STARTUP' tab and list all the applications that have a 'tick' beside them (you can hit 'Prt Scn' and copy/paste the image to 'Paint' and post it here if that's easier).
When we see the list we can advise on what processes to 'stop' (remove the tick) and then you can reboot - hopefully running a lot faster.
Then you can run a program called CCleaner (free download) that removes unwanted files.
After these steps you should be running quite a lot faster.
last resort would be to reload Windoze XP and all your applications - bit drastic though.....

Re: dont know where to start
Thankyou kellys- eye especially for quick reply. Now i will have a good try at this it will take me a while to get back to you . But it is a good start . I once took this pc to pc- world and as it did not come with a bootable cd they mabe me a floppy, that i still have, and i have used it 3 times since, i also had to make 3 master copy cd's .So if i were to reboot again back to factory settings i dont know if i would need an updated bootable floppy as my updates have took me to service pk 3. Anyway i will get started on your first advice, and the practice is good as i would like to sometime in the future get a newer pc so might as well learn on this , hope this all makes sense,
your help is very valuable
