tiling in cabin (or caravan!)

Post by suzeworld »

I know tiling aint a great idea on the panels a cabin is made of, which is very much lke a caravan in the inside ... but we've had a major refit here and need something to bridge the gap between kitchen work top and wall.

the walls are not all the same, a samll section is plyboard, with paint on, one bit is thin board with a melamine coating on it, and the other section is similair but someone told my that was vinyl coating .. which was the original finish in the original van

I only want to use one strip of mosaic tiles about 12 cm high, but what can I use to stick them?

HELP!

Now this is a really really bodge it answer.

But if it was me, I would use gripfill.

As if its only a caravan for 12cm high, it shouldn't be a problem.

My van always has a box (12tubes) of gripfill on.

People slate it, but when you turn up and someone says "oh you couldn't just do this for me", you can do loads of quick fixes for free and make the customer even happier!

I hope that no-one searching for tiling advice actually uses gripfill for proper tiling jobs. Its all right for very very small areas of low use. But stick with normal tile adhesive for normal tiling jobs.

a thought
how thin and how flexible is the panel in the area you want to tile??
if its as thin as i think it will be [6mm or less] i would consider using 12mm exteriour ply in the area no nails to the wall and to the tiles
we are all ------------------still learning

I would stick up some stainless steel. Cut a pattern out of ply or hardboard and take this to a steel stockist and ask him to cut it for you. The finish will look stylish and it will flex with any movement in the vessel. I think that tiles will pop off in due course.

Dont be fooled by the word cabin...................cos in the last sentence the word ''van'' is mentioned.

I bet the cabin is the posh end of the camper van. The van end being where you drive and listen to the wife giving wrong directions :dunno:
