Wall units to plasterboarded wall

Post by bohboh »

I have a new extension built, the walls are brick outside, then cavity and concrete blocks on the inside. To the inside wall are dot and dabbed plasterboards which have been skimmed.
There is a void between the dabs, is it safe to fit wall units to these? should i try and screw them into the concrete blocks?
I will also need to fit a cooker hood.
Any advice?

i have fitted them thru the void into the block and got a good hold/near dabs then some have been so sloppy ive had to cut a section of plasterboard out and fix timber to the wall to fill the void and fix the unit brackets to the timber.

ive heard storys of people drilling thru into the block then filling the void with nonails. also cutting a piece of copper pipe to act as a sleve

the units i fit have a rail about 70mm up to put 2 extra fixings which is good.
what i try to do is mark the units out before boarding and getting the plasterer to put a row of solid dabs

try make it as secure as you can a 1000 unit is not light to start with filled with tins/plates it gets real heavy, i wouldent like one falling on anyone

How do you know if the hold is good for me to decide whether to cut the boards and fix timber? The idea with drilling holes and filling with no nails seems the simplest. Effective?

its hard to say as every fixing will be diffrent.

if you screw the bracket on and can keep tightening it that it sinks the plasterboard it will prob be no good.

the nonails idea is abit dodgy imo, how do you know its going behind the board were you want it and not just dropping in the cavity? then it will take a few days to dry before the units can be fitted

if you dont want to fit timber try the copper pipe, the bracket will be clamped to the blockwork and the plasterboard will offer some support.

someone else may have a better way? theres a few kitchen fitters on the forum....

drill the holes for the bracket, then cut a 15mm hole in the plasterboard using your fixing hole as the centre.
then cut some 15mm pipe to go from the block to flush with the plasterboard then as you screw into the block it will pull the bracket upto the copper and clamp it against the block. the plasterboard will help support the downward pull.

for screws id use 3 1/2 or 4" 10s and brown plugs

I've used these plugs very successfully in the past on D&D walls. They are quite long so get a good grip into the blocks.

they are excellent plugs, am always surprised what they can hold in a suspect wall. they really mash well into the wall

What is so special about those wall plugs? what do they offer that normal wall plugs dont?

They work well in pretty much in any material - brick, concrete, plasterboard, block, lath/plaster, etc.

Cheers.

My plan is to fit a magnet kitchen, I am only going to fit the floor and wall units. I am leaving the worktop to a chippie and the cooker hood to a proper fitter.
Is this doable?, I am ok at diy but wonder if this is more complicated than it appears.
