Need help with burning please

Post by bobbie-dazzler »

Hi everyone, I need some info and help as I have a little problem with burning.

Basically I have Vista, and according to the spec I cannot copy/burn onto a CD but a dvdr, which is no good to me, as I want to copy some tracks off my original CDS and put them all on the one CD.
I have put the CDS into my windows media thingy,so I can pick and choose my favourites and now want to put them onto a blank CD, so obviously I can play it on a CD player, but it wont let me. :cb
What do I do?, yes, they will go on a DVDR, which is not what I want, I want cds, I have tried a CDR recordable, but just does not want to know, is there anything I can do to change or modify so it will burn on a CD?

Many thanks in advance

I'm having trouble understanding what you're trying to do. Are you trying to burn a selection of tracks from Windows Media Player to CD? If you are, you could just have selected more tracks than will fit onto a CD. A CD can typically hold 650MB or 700MB depending on the CD. Try selecting fewer tracks and see how you get on.

it might be because of copyright issues the microsofts windows media will not allow this , a third prty program like nero should allow this

Crikey! your having trouble understanding????, you want to be in my shoes then, I havent a clue about computers lol, but I can only tell you what has been happening as I am trying to transfer stuff.

This is the only way I can explain what I am trying to do, so bear with me, as this is all gobblygook to me. :cb

I have lots of CDs, and there might be a few tracks on some that I like, so rather than listen to the whole CD of tracks that I dont like, I thought I would copy my favourite ones onto one or two CDs.
So I inserted the CDS and placed the CD/tracks into media player, so now I have a list of all the tracks.
I then want to pick certain tracks and put them onto a CD, so I can play it, but cause I am Vista for some reason it wont copy onto a CD, but will copy onto a dvdr, which is okay if I am playing it on the telly, but I want a cd disc so I can play it as a cd.
Is there anything I can do to change the format, so vista will allow me to record the tracks that are in windows media onto a CD?

Please please dont say you dont understand, as I dont know how else to explain it.. :cb

So have you copied the individual tracks that you want to put onto one CD onto your PC? If not, open Media Player go to Tools -> Options - > Rip Music. Change location to somewhere you can remember and change the output format to mp3, choose OK. Put the CD into your DVD drive, Media Player should change to a view where you can select tracks. Tick the tracks you want and click RIP. Repeat for each CD. Once you've done this you can view all your tracks in Media Player. Right click on each track and add to Burn List. Once you've selected all the tracks you can choose to "Start Burn" at the top of the Burn List. Media player will prompt you to keep putting in CDs until all the tracks have been burned to disk. If you want you can reorder the burn list. You can also see how many CDs you'll need from the Burn List.

Thankyou Chat, I will give that go at the weekend, I dont think I can face all this till then, as its still all gobblygook to me, but I will come back and let you know how I get on, many thanks for your time in explaining it to me, and most of all your patience. :-)

Thought I would give you an update on things, well TBH, I havent done it yet, as I could'nt face it  , and part of me keeps putting it off as deep down I dont think I will do it, but this weekend, I have nothing planned, ie no weekend work, or car boot, so I will read through your instructions again, and follow it to the letter, and I will report back. :-)

Update on the update....

I have managed to copy some of my favourite tracks that was in my media player onto a cdr, but a couple of times the disc got stuck in the compartment, and had a nightmare getting it back out, but eventually it came out, and somehow I have managed to burn some tracks, but.. and its a big but, the CD wont play on my CD player. ::b

I know the reason as had a window appear as I was trying to burn saying, 'that at least one of the tracks is protected, and may not play on a cd player', so I managed to suss out how to go through all the tracks and see which one or other songs were protected, then I would remove the song, and carry on with the burning, but when I went into properties and clicked on 'media usage rights' this list appears..

This file can be played a number of times
Collabarative play for this file is allowed.
The file can be burned an unlimited number of times.
the file can be synchronized an unlimited number o0f times.
The media usage rights for this file can be backed up.

Is this saying that it is protected?
Also, the albums that I am trying to copy from are genuine bought albums that I put in the media player, but now I want to copy tracks of certain albums onto a cd, so I take these with me to Cuba and play on a cd player.

I did a test one, tried it on a cd player, and its just blank, is there anything I can do asap, as need to get this done before I go away.

the way I used to do it is to create a new folder on the desktop called something like 'My CD' then using My Computer copy the tracks from the CDs that you want and place them into that folder. You will have to change some of the file names because, for example, you'll want Track 1 off your Prodigy album but also want Track 1 off your George Formby album and those file names will clash. One you have all the tracks you want just burn the contents to a CD

When I check the usage rights on my mp3s it says "This file is not protected" If you go to Tools -> Options and then the Rip tab in Windows Media Player, is the "Copy protect music" option unticked?

# chat.... If you mean tools> internet options, then there is nothing there that says rip tab, it just shows the window that says at the top, privacy general security etc, and shows the browsing history, cookies etc.

If I go into the actual media player and click on the rip tab it just says at the top.. title, length, rating, contributing artist etc, and underneath on the blank bit it says.. to begin, insert an audio cd into the cd drive.

I cant see anywhere where when I click on the rip tab where it says to untick, unless I am looking in the wrong place?

Okay, have found it, it was ticked, so do I untick it then?

I suppose I could test it out on another CD, but have already used up some that dont play on the cd player, and I cant erase them????, or can I record over them?

Its just the ordinary CDR discs

CDR's are record only once...CD R/W's are re-recordable...

For some reason I cant start a new thread on this topic, so here is another update....

Well, its been a flippen nightmare tbh, as now my cd has got stuck in the drive, and I cant get it out, then I went into computer to see if I could eject that way, then it went weird from there.
I never got a chance to eject it, as also windows media had a window says not responding, and I right clicked to try and eject, then I lost everything at the bottom of the screen, ie the little boxes telling you what site your in, my icons on the right telling you sound, computer status etc, also lost the top, ie favourites etc, so now I have a full blank screen, and nowhere to click, and the damn CD still stuck.

I switched on and of PC about 4 times, got as far as the start-up, then blank, pulled plugs, still gets as far start up, then nothing.

So I left it for 30 mins, tried again, and got in, but still CD stuck, and am scared to poke around with it in case I cant get the PC going again like earlier, and as am off on holiday tomorrow, I dont want to start messing around with it.

Will the stuck CD do any damage when I switch off all my PC, as it will still be in there till I come back from holiday?
