TILE OR BOARD ?

previous post was thinking of boarding before tiling. but have remove old tiles and apart from a bit of old adhesive (orange stuff...looks like resin based??) and the obvious peeling paint or odd loose plaster patches as shown i think the walls may be ok to tile straight onto.

its a bungalow so downstairs, the walls are solid block and plastered/skimmed straight onto.. so i reckon fairly solid.

so i'm in two minds to board or just tile?? will be using 30x60 porcelain about 8-10mm thick

i expect most will say board anyway, easier to tile and get the walls true. but dont know if its worth the expense. good size room, walls 20sqm.

next qn is, if i do board, whats the best way to fix to walls like this? presume adhesive, but drill, plug and screw?

hard to tell from the pics whether it is ok to tile on....................should in theory, be fine as long as the paint is sound and any remaining adhesive is removed. you can do a paint test by sticking a few strips of gaffer tape on the walls. i leave them till next and and then pull them off, if they take the paint off then that is also what you need to do, if paint stays on the walls then tile over. not forgetting of course to prime the walls with a primer which is recommended by the adhesive manufacturer. DON'T use PVA for this.

With tiles that size you need to be using a cement based adhesive. So a bagged adhesive which you mix yourself. these are too big for tubbed adhesive. They also need to be going onto a very flat surface due to the size of them. So if the wall is undulating at the moment then think about having them skimmed before you tile. If you decide to board then you will also need to take into account the maximum weight of tiles you can fix to it. plaster can hold a heavier weight.

No point in having expensive tiles of that size and two bob walls to put them on.
