Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
That sounds great. Thanks a lot. Only problem now is if the builders go for your idea, will they be competent enough to scribe the worktop to the wall and make a good job of fitting it! I live in hope!

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
Something I don't understand (amongst many other things!) is that bringing the cupboards forward has made the line of the cupboards look like they're sticking out slightly at an angle. I thought the whole point of doing that was to straighten the line up. Or was it done so that the worktop join would line up? I'm so confused! Hope I don't sound as thick as I think I do! You wouldn't think I had 10 O'levels would you?!?

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
If they brought them out, it was to line them up. It may look like they are kinking out without the worktop on but may not be. Take a peice of string and put it from one corner to another then pull tight, the string should be straight. If it's not then that 40mm gap could be reduced or made larger depending on which way the units are bending

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
The main builder said they will be brought out more to make it 40 mm. He said about the piece of string too. Thanks for explaining it to me.

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
Not sure if I noticed it right??
What has happened to the end panels either side of the cooker hood? Not a brilliant picture, but it looks like the builders have missed out the cornice on the bottom of the wall units, and put longer end panels
Maybe my eyesight.........I am an old git

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
No, not your eyesight...according to the designer at Wickes, it's fashion!
The builders put them on differently at first. They put the pelmets on the other way up, so that they dropped down longer but then the end panels were shorter than the pelmets. First the guy from the yellow pages said they were the wrong way around and then the designer from Wickes said so. So they turned them around, so that they were just narrow pelmets and the end panels were then longer either side. As I said, the designer at Wickes said this is fashionable. I know one thing and that's it's dangerous! My poor mum was looking at the gap behind the worktop at the end (where the telephone is) and caught her forehead on the end panel below the pelmet as she got up. It really hurt but luckily didn't break the skin. Fashion can be dangerous! Not that I'm sure it is fashion! Don't believe much of what that designer says.

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
I really should go back to the showroom and have a look at our kitchen there. Haven't seen it since we ordered it. There's a few things I'd like to check on. Those end panels below the pelmets would be one and another would be to check all the decorative end panels. In the brochure they have the solid oak frames on them like the doors. The one's we've got are just plain veneer. The builders said the ones in the showroom do have the oak frames on them. Maybe another call to customer services is warranted. I think they'll put the phone down when they hear my voice yet again!

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
Just seen the pic you posted. That's how the builders put them on at first. The pelmets have been turned round now, so that the end panels are longer than the pelmets.

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
I would insist on replacement decor end panels then
Is it the "Rockford" range from Wickes.
I got my kitchen from Wickes and they where brilliant......no probs whatsoever. Not that, that is much use to you.....but you get good and bad everywhere

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
What is the range name of the units? Why dont you go to the showroom and take some photos to show how they should look?

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
I've only just asked them to replace 2 of the end decor panels as they had a weird finish to them. Like water stains all over them but not actually damaged. They said they'd replace them if this was the last of the replacements we would ask for now. I said it was but have now noticed they all should have had the frames on them.
The kitchen is called Melbourne diyguys.
Have just had a look at the Benchmarx site and they don't appear to have our worktop They have got High Definition ones but not Bahia Granite, which is ours. Don't know if they would have it at the shop.

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
Glad you had a good experience with Wickes Only-Me. We went with them because I'd read good reviews online. The builders brought us brochures from B&Q at first but everyone warned against them online. I'm sure you're right and there are good and bad everywhere. Still think I would go for a small firm and not one of the diy stores if I had a kitchen fitted again.
Another thing I'm not happy about, going back to the fitting, is the cornices on the larder units. There is a 1cm gap between them and the top of the doors. Again, looks poorly finished. From what I can see, there should be a small gap between the top and bottom door instead but when I asked the builders about this, they said that would look worse, because you'd see the bracket inbetween. The designer suggested a filler but the builders said this would look horrible too. One of the builders is always prepared to try and change things but the other always argues with him.

Wickes can go to hell! If there is a problem with a product you have bought then they should replace it.Blue Mermaid wrote:I've only just asked them to replace 2 of the end decor panels as they had a weird finish to them. They change the names between the two, for example your kitchen is called Oakhurst at Benchmarx, give them a call and ask about the worktop

Re: Laminate butt worktop trim
Couldn't agree more Colour Republic! It's not our fault so many mistakes were made. I understand that they'd prefer to deliver them all at once but not everything was noticed straight away. Actually, I think I did notice the missing frames but there were so many other things going wrong at the time I didn't look into it.
Will give Benchmarx a call as you suggest and will check the invoice and see if I can find the decor end panels and see if they say in-frame or not. The builders thought Wickes had forgotten to send the end panels for the larder at the end of the room (where the washer and dryer is situated) but the designer said there wasn't supposed to be any there. He said they were over £200 each (so Wickes wouldn't be prepared to give us them, as they weren't in the plans). but when the builders looked them up (or saw them), they were £70. Now I'm thinking maybe they are £200 if they have the solid frame part with them and £70 if they're just plain veneer like the ones we've been supplied with.
