Makita drill Var-speed kaput!

Howdy all,
I have a Makita drill very similar to this

The variable speed trigger has stopped working. It just starts at full speed. I am surprise it has failed so quickly as I only use for heavy use DIY. It is under 2 years old!

Are these expensive to get fixed and do i have to bring it to a Makita repair centre?

Surprised that its fkd only after such a short time, how much was it ,did you get it from screwfix.

yes from Screwfix, only 1 year guarantee with them I think, pity

Service center NO! not at all. Its all plug in wires & possibly 2 screws but thats it, just take a pic of the original wireing before fitting new parts. As for price your looking at 25 - 35 £ tops. Can you tell us which model it actualy is that you have as there are different triggers for different models, if you look on the side it will have "BHP" with 3 numbers after it, they are important to get right as like ive said different triggers for most makita models. If you've lost the stickers on the side with the model code post a pic of your drill side on so we can see it then we can give you a proper parts list.

Ok great, Glad I posted, thanks StyXSIS I was about to ring the Makita Service Center Monday,

From the original receipt the Model number is BHP452RFX.

Yes thats correct. Everything else is on the drill, all that you need is part no#6 the trigger switch. Thats the site i was going to send you to aswell so your already set to go.

As a matter of interest why did the var speed stop working. It seems odd that it was working on day and not the next.

I was mixing easyfill with it so perhaps was too much for it, dunno

You've just burt the switch out, thats all. There not built to do that kind of work. All you did was keep it at a speed the switch couldn't get rid of the heat build up, so its more than likely its warped the trigger housing or burnt out internal parts of the switch that regulate the vari speed. They've not changed much in years, if i remember its just copper plates or strips that go small to large as you pull the trigger which let more electric current to pass through giving vari speed. So if they are warped or burnt they dont let a small current to pass just the maximum current as its more power going through the switch (thats just a crued explination but you get the point i think?).

oww gawd a definate no no high torx slow speed you need a very low geared mixer

I took it apart last night, housing looks fine so limited damage done. I have ordered another part from the link in my post above. I screwed in a whole pile of TORX concrete screws a few months back so have put the drill through its paces: wink:

Can’t complain given what I am using it for.

Always hard to justify a mixer drill as I don’t have much need for it. I guess I should mix a little at a time or just use a lot of elbow grease

Use a cack electric drill for mixing. £25 red devil one or Ryobi, something on them lines.

Most speed controls are now electronic (triac/diac) but are not rated for continuous, heavy-duty operation.

At a pinch you can actually use light dimmers (suitably power-rated) as speed controllers. I have a separate 13A trailing socket with a built-in speed controller so it can be used on 'any' power tool.
