Stained Grouting - what has caused this ?

Post by billyw »

Shower area tiled approx 1 year ago - white tiles & white grout used - white grout has begun to discolour - tiler suspects the discolouration has occured from behind the tiles and has not been caused by general use.

Plywood (15mm) was glued and screwed to 70 x 45 framing. Tiler treated ply with PVA and tiled using good quality materials

Appears to be no issue with tiles moving, falling off etc

Anybody got any idea why this grout has discoloured ? After 40 yrs experience in the joinery trade I've never seen his happening!!

Thanks.

Soap...more likely the customer is using highly coloured soap...green would be shield/fairy....yellow is that yellow soap the name escapes me...if black..then it's mould and inadequate ventilation...

If it is an orange colour it could be the early stage of mould culture. This stuff is good for cleaning it up http://www.amazon.co.uk/HG-Mould-Spray/dp/B000IU40HQ

If its a light coffee coloured stain, then its more likely drawing the stain from the ply. Should have used 12mm Hardibacker

PVA should NEVER have been used.

Could be many different causes most common would be

A) mould from poor air flow
B) mould from fatty deposits
C) resins from the ply leaching

And as has been said, pva should not have been used, even more so in a wet area
