Right-click My Computer > Properties.

Click the Advanced tab, then the Settings button underneath Performance.

Click the Advanced tab again, then the Change button underneath Virtual Memory.

The initial size needs to be the same as the installed RAM. Set the maximum size to 2.5 times the installed RAM.

Click Set, then OK your way out.

It's not ideal using hard disk space as virtual memory as it increases the load on the hard disk and means it will wear out quicker. You need to look at increasing the RAM in your computer.

Thanks RichieP,

i've set the maximum to recomended 670: min 10.
Hope that does the trick, seems ok so far.
I'd heard of VM but didnt know what it was.

Instead of increasing RAM, would getting rid of unwanted programs help to ease the burden?
Thanks again for your help

min 10.
?? It needs to be the same as the RAM installed.

Removing some unneeded guff would help, but adding RAM is the cheapest (and easiest) way to get more performance from your computer.

There's no minimum size.

The initial size should be the same as your RAM.

Even MS recommend the initial size to be 1.5 times your RAM, so you've got it way too low.

Hard wire your your page file and forget about it

Post by seprim »

dont set your page file to an expandable size - dont let microsoft have any say in it - u know they cant manage a pizz up in a brewery so why let them manage your swap drive

Set min = 1GB (or something large)
Set max = 1 GB (or something same as above)

and sit back - that way you dont have microsoft (very poorly written programs) expanding and contracting your swap file, because its set in stone.
dont put in different values for your swap file (virtual memory = same thang)
set it in stone and get on with your life :)

btw - dont forget to periodically scandisk and defrag ok !
oh and remove all those services u DONT need like remote registry hmmm
good luck
