PVC window help needed

Post by mary19 »

Hi

I have a double glazed pvc window in my bathroom that is just outside of it's 10 year guarantee.

There is a locking handel inside that you normally unlock and then turn the handel form right to left and this unlocks the shoot bolts ( I think that is what they are called) and the window will open. I can now unlock the key mechanism but when I turn the handel there is no resistance at all as the shootbolts are still engaged.

I don't know how to fix this but I can't open the window.

If you can find out what make the handle is, or a local double glazing installer, it's not a difficult job to take off the old one and fit the new. It should be a case of just undoing the two screws and fitting the new lock. But like I say, the two holes must coincide with the existng holes.

I think you will find the handles are a standard size

take the old handle off, remove the two screws and the pull the whole handle towards you.
There will be a square bar inside, you may find that this square bar is worn out.
You should remove the square bar and then you can try turning the mechanism with a screwdriver, you could also use a handle from another window.

If it is work out then you can get a replacement handle from screwfix they are about £5

Thankyou so much!

You gave me the confidence to remove the screws and take a look, I was afraid of doing this before incase any bits fell off inside. I thought I might of had to get a new window

I removed the screws and the small bar had somehow slipped into the window too far, I removed it with a magnet and pushed it firmly into the handel and then replaced the screws.

It works fine now :thumbright:

Thanks again you guys!

the bar may slip again, you may want to get a new longer bar (you may have to cut a new one to length) for the future
