I've even got a 'Little Gem book of tree species'

Me too, well I'm close to the New Forest anyway, but yours is a bit of a monoculture isn't it?

I got 9/10 , (and I still don't think the trunk looks pale enough to be an Ash tree).

you'd think

.... apart from the massive reliance on pine, there are significant areas of deciduous woodlands. One side of our location is pine-encrusted, the other is a random selection of all sorts of stuff which I've been told are being left to 'grow wild'....

I'm in the middle of thinning the trees to establish an orchard.

I have 4 apple trees in the garden, but due to mis-labelling I may not have the best selection for pollination.
