Can somebody confirm that to have a freeview box you need a digital aerial?? the reason for asking is that somebody has given my mum a freeview Pacific PSTB1 box, yet she is with Virgin Media (very basic £4 a month package-hardly any channels etc etc, so please dont ask why she wants freeview when she is on cable but without sounding prejudice thats my old mum for you ) and she was told she could run the cable from the wall into her freeview box then plug a scart lead from Freeview box to TV and then get Freeview, is this possible

I does depend but try using the existing aerial first before going through the expense of changing the aerial. My mum had a similar thing when it all first came out (forgotten what it was called then) but she bought the box and was told her aerial and coax needed upgrading and gave her a price around £300 iirc. She very nearly paid up but I went to visit her, set the box up and it found all the channels no problems.

As NW says, just plug your old aerial wire into the freeview box and plug the box into the tv. Switch both on and then follow the instructions to tune in the freeview box. It should work OK.
All this about a digital aerial can work out to be an expensive scam if your old aerial gets the signal fine.

In some areas you might miss out on one of the channel using the same old 'analogue' antenna. This is only a rare example though.

Virgin should have all the freeview channels a set-top box can provide - the only difference being that you can get set-top boxes that receive HD freeview that Virgin would charge you for.
