using quickset render or tile adhesive on plaster undercoat.

Post by mr bosch »

Hi,
from what i've read on here, the use of tile adhesive on plaster undercoat is a no no. i've removed the old tiles off 4 walls which most of the finish plaster skim has come off with the tile so what bits of skim were left on i've since scrapped off to give me a flat plaster undercoat.
as i don't have time on my side to get the walls reskimmed, can i use quickset render to skim over the undercoat and allowing 24 hours drying time,
tile straight on the render.
does the wall need priming with sbr prior to rendering or render first, then prime pre tile fix.
i've added a pic of the state of the wall.
any advice greatly recieved,
wish there was an adhesive that you could use straight onto undercoat, would make things a lot easier ::b
regards

You can't use rapid set tile adhesive to skim over it..............that will be the same end result as tiling onto it. the only time you can do so is when you have the odd small area here and there and that depends on tile size.

I know Bal do a quickset render however, I also know that the products I use are not suitable for applying to backing plaster. They only list brick, block and concrete backgrounds and I would imagine Bal will be exactly the same substrates listed.

I would normally skim with finish plaster.

mapei
Nivoplan motar..but you will need to prime it with a good FEW coats with their primer G..
but as roc states it is dodging doing this to a gypsum based bonding/browning coat..so imo give their tech line a call first..

what is the orginal base...brick/block etc ..if so i would stip back to this and tile.

thanks for the info guys.
i did call bal this morning and they said it was ok to use the render on the undercoat,
prime the undercoat with SBR 3:1 and can tile straight onto render once its dry.
i'll keep the mapei nivoplan in mind for future projects.

regards
