i have super anti spyware and avg got rid off norton as it slowed down the computer 'all free versions
never have any problems they just find the odd "adult" tracking cookie

Adult tracking cookie, is that the same as a singles club.

Dave thanks so much i feel computers are all reading and fixing then more reading and fixing i get put off as it seems the links are never ending

I did use the driver scanner(but that was before i read your reply) it told me my drivers were ancient and to buy the updades so i have since uninstalled it.

Then i clicked on your( Microsoft Security Essentials) link, but as yet i have not got the printer sorted so i watched and listened to the how to video and have wrote it all down, took me ages but i will really need to get the hang of all this stuff.

So im going to try to download and install the above, Then i will need to find out what you mean by the CPU usage
And dave in the system properties it says

Don't panic about that.
When you have installed MSE and you click on the Settings Tab to set a scheduled scan, in the Window it says:
"Limit CPU usage during scan" so click on the box just before the words to put a tick in the box. Then after the words is a dropdown menu, just click on the down arrow and click on 50%. Dead easy.

Thank's again dave look's like those settings have all been set by default for me.
Now since i have downloaded (mse) my pc is very slow im willing to persevere as i take it it may, just be a fix here and there.

I tried a full scan and near the end 3 different windows came up but i can't remember what the full message was, the same happened when i did a short scan they both had the same error code 0x800106ba, the both scans never finished is there a way to sort this dave..........and im so sorry to ask again and i hope you can make sense of this post

The error code is a Windows Defender error.
MS Security Essentials disables Defender automatically because it is no longer needed.
It is installed as a service and is disabled at the Service snapin.

Try this:
Click Start -> Run -> and type services.msc and click enter.
At the services windows scroll down and see if Windows Defender is enabled.
If so, double click on it and stop the service and then disable it.

Did you update MSE as soon as you installed it?

It should not slow your computer. Check in Task manager how much CPU, if any, it is using.
Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys all together and that will open Task Manager.
Click the Processes Tab and look for 'msseces.exe' and see what figure is in the CPU column.

dave is it possible that i dont have windows defender, i looked it up and noticed it is a free download, would it be under a different name on my windows xp,or should i have this downloaded.

Using XP you may not have Defender installed.
Go ahead and look at the Task Master.
As well as checking the msseces.exe have a look at anything that is using a lot of CPU in the list and post back here with it's name.

Dave i just typed a lot of stuff there and when i went to post it i was not logged in

Aileen,
With the MSE showing 0% CPU it is not that which is causing your computer to run slowly.

To get the Close button etc back on Task manager, just point the mouse pointer at the outer border and double click it. magic.

What we need to do is find out what is running and using a lot of resources, have a look at the Task manager again, but don't double click the border because you will lose the Close button, is ther anything running that is using a lot of CPU in the list, by a lot, I mean more than 25%?

Right,
the system idle is just that, 91% of the available CPU is not being used, so that means that only 9% of the available central processing unit is being used to run your computer which is great.

Take your time with this next bit.

Click on Start -> Run and in the box type msconfig and click OK .
When the Configuration window opens click on the Startup Tab.
Make a list of all the items in the first column, Startup Items. If you cannot read the full name, put the pointer onto the Title bar where it says Startup Items ...Manufacturer and slowly slide it to the right towards the Manufacturer's column title. When it changes to a cross with arrow heads pointing left and right, left click and hold down the mouse button and slowly slide to the right. This will slide the 2nd column to the right and you should see the full name of the startup item.
List all items in the list whether they have a tick or not.
Make your list and post it here for tomorrow and I will go through it for you.

Here are the explanations for the running processes in msconfig -> Startup List:

EM.EXEC is for your Logitec Mouse Settings so leave it.

MMKeybd is for your One Touch Multi Media Keyboard so leave it.

backweb-448364 can be STOPPED by clicking the tick box to remove the tick.
Then go to Start -> All Programs -> Add/Remove and look for 'backweb'. If there, click it and select uninstall.

msseces is the MSE program so leave it.

ctfmon can be stopped and also removed:

MSNMSGR can be stopped by clicking the tick box to remove the tick.

Update and Launcher (not sure what they are for) in the manufacturer column of msconfig did it state who the company is?

That just might speed up your startup a little, so reboot and then see if your computer is still slow. Did you remove any other antivirus that you had installed?

Aileen, when you next log-in, put a tick in the box (Just below your password) that says "Log me in automatically"....Then you won't have the same problem again.
