The gates are hanging

This weekend, I found some time to weld the shoe to the bottom hinge, the shoe is a 1 ½ foot long piece of U profile that will fit around the bottom joist of the gate

The hinge above is the wall plate which is going to be the top hinge
I admit I am not the world’s best welder, but was not disappointed with the final result (of course I ran out of welding wire, and had to get some new one, (I just got a bit crazy and didn’t now I was using that much wire)
Below you see the shoe fitted to the bottom of the gate, 6 screws will hold the gate in the shoe, the bottom got painted before fitting

Here you see the final result of all the hard work, the gates are finally fitted

Really happy with the final result, the opening between the gates is 12mm, i had calculated for 10mm, so all in all really happy
What remains to be done is:

Electrics / Intercom / lights / wooden gate styles / etc

although if that's exposed un-painted wood on the bottom your in trouble especially if its covered by metal

No its not, its been treated with the sadaline stain, the whole gate has been done now three times, we probably will redo it again when its a bit warmer, as this stuff dries so slowly

Cant tell from the photo's if the post box is on the inside of the property or out (just thinking of Mr Postie having to open them up each day to deliver your junk leaflets)

gates open inwards, so you can drive up (have the car of the main road) press the intercom

Mailbox opens up at the back, so we can get at it without having to open up the gate

Good use of the floor box and shoe to hang them. They blend in well with the situation. Very nice work.

Just observations and nothing to do with your workmanship:

Surprising that such big gates and obviously not cheap are not manufactured from joinery grade timber, as standard. At least the Sadolin will allow the resin from the knots to bleed through and be wiped away by the client for a year or so until they have stopped bleeding. I wonder how many edge knots are going to be popping out.

With gates that size I would expect the braces to be let into the ledges. ledges should also be chamfered. You can also get them with a drip groove to the underside of the ledges but would probably be bespoke for that.

You forgot to mention not having any rebate on the centre closer.

On the other hand, the house doesn't seem to be in more secluded spot, rather than having loads of commuters walking past and peering through gaps as they do so. So non rebates aren't so much of an issue.

There are still styles to be fitted at the collums, and also a centre strip/style, you always have one lead door, so when everything is done, you are not able to peak through anymore.

They are semi bespoke / of the shelf. i give them the measurements / model type, and they build according to it

With all gates, the proof is in the pudding, lets see how they are in a year or so, have the sagged, split have knots popped out (although its grade 5)

I got the welder from my BIL as he never uses it, and had i burried in his shed.

I bought 3 years ago one of those electric visors that go dark when there is a spark, and they are brilliant.
