tile on plaster board ?

Post by paul777 »

hello
i`m thinking of tileing my bathroom out in a few months
the old black moter is on the walls
knocking all off to the brickwork
then drylining the wall with 12.5 plaster boards
is this suitable to tile on the boards
thank you paul
ps i will not be plastering the wall

It is suitable for tiling on.

Like any substrate though, you need to keep within the limitations of combined weight it can take.........combined weight being, adhesive, tiles and grout.

12.5 mm PB is about 30kgs per meter but as ROC says this must be tile, addy and grout! general rule of thumb is 4kgs per mtr for addy and grout!

the exact weights can be found in the white book by BG

I would advise that you use Aquapanel or similar cement board in the wet areas. Any water creeping through a pinhole in the grout will knacker the plasterboard substrate. http://www.knaufdrywall.co.uk/aquapanel/ You cannot dot and dab Aquapanel see http://www.teachmediy.co.uk/NetsiteCMS/ ... panel.html

you shouldnt be dabbing tile adhesive, it is applied in a thin spread then combed up! doing it that way keeps the weight to 3-4 kg per meter!

and use plaster boards with Polystyrene backing ?
if you use insulated plasterboard this shoud be mechanically fixed as well as dot and dabbed!

or batten the walls and screw plaster boards ?
if you batten then use a kingspan insulation then use hardi backerboard as that hold 50kg per meter of tile!

you can tile straight onto plasterboard as long as your tiles and adhesive and grout DO NOT EXCEED 30KG per meter

just remember your tiling is only safe as long as the substrate is secure fixed!

thank you paul
