Hello, I'm in a quandary and need some advice. I have a hallway with three distinct sections all with different floor coverings and I want to rationalise it putting down ceramic tiles throughout. The front doorway area has been stripped down to the base concrete and is not a problem. The next and biggest area is currently floored with old fashioned 3/4 inch thick highly polished and tightly fitted timber which gives only very slightly when walked on. The third area is carpeted over two layers of lino tiles.
My question - would it be better to take the whole lot back to the base concrete (screeded to bring the levels equal) than risk the possibility of tiles cracking with the timber movement and the difficulties around the differing floor levels.
Is it safe to tile directly onto the timber without resorting to hardboard coverings (which will alter the levels again).
Many thanks for any help
Russ

Take a look at schluter ditra matting, this should answer your problems.
