Ethernet cable

Post by TheApprentice2011 »

I'm looking for a cheap ethernet lead at screw fix they have a lead which looks like a ethernet cable but im not sure if it doesnt say what it says is rj45 patch cable, is this a ethernet or not. If not at tool station they have one which looks like a ethernet cable but doesnt say what it says is 10m CAT5 UTP patch lead. My question is, are either of these a ethernet cable that i can use to connect my xbox 360 to my mates bt home hub. Thanks in advance

Not sure I would go to Screwfix or Toolstation, for computer stuff, unless it was specialist trade use.

RJ45 is the name of the connector fitted to an ethernet cable
UTP is Unshielded Twisted Pair which is the type of cable
Cat5e is the standard the cable confirms to
Patch basically means the cable is straight through and not including a crossed over pair (used when you dont have a hub/router/switch and need to link 2 computers together)
Ethernet is the communication standard (there were and are several others out there)

So basically UTP patch leads are ethernet, as are RJ45 cables

Scruff: My RJ45 crimper and RJ45 plugs came from screwfix, work fine, they are after all still a tool and come from "proper" suppliers. Plus it fits in with other cabling and such for comms technicians. Though I would worry a little if they started selling computers

Thanks Scot, I was just surprised they and TS sold such things, it certainly wouldn't be my first port of call.

scot-canuck is spot on with the description.

I never buy from PC world as they are expensive. Online is best. Try Amazon, Play.com, Ebuyer... and if you buy from ebay, be careful its not some cheapo cable.

The leads should only cost a few quid wherever you buy from.
