Dell Alienware laptop

I thought I'd treat myself to a new laptop. As I do video editing and lots of work that uses lots of processing power I looked at the Dell alienware laptops, these are high end gaming laptops that have plenty of power. I wanted a small laptop, but with lots of power and good battery life.


The spec of the laptop is -

Intel core I7 processor
8GB Ram
500Gb hard drive
11 inch screen
Battery that can power the laptop for roughly 8 hours.

I ordered a less spec laptop than this from Dell on the 24th April and I got an email saying it would be delivered on or before the 29th April, then a day later I got an email saying it would be delivered on or before the 28th May

The order was cancelled at my request as I need the laptop ASAP, so Angie started looking on the internet and found them for sale at bargain prices here-

I bought the laptop from them directly from their website and it was delivered the next day

The laptop is one that has been returned to Dell, but it is in first class mint condition

From the Dell website a laptop of this spec is £1600 plus, I bought it from cloudstation for about £1000 and it was in stock and delivered very quickly

I have found Dell difficult to deal with, so finding these people that actually have the laptops in stock for immediate delivery was a very good find by Angie

With my spate of bad luck buying things from Dell recently getting this laptop has been a real bonus, I played with it yesterday and I am extremely impressed as it has almost the same power as my desktop computer.

So if anyone else is looking for a Dell Alienware computer do not automatically go to Dell for it as you can get a much better deal here-

I think I'd end up with sore knees if I had that thing on my lap for any length of time!

It's a cracking little computer

I'm well impressed with it as it only weighs about 5lbs

5lbs? That's a full bag of spuds in old money.

Bet it geneartes enough heat to cook the spuds too!

Yes, mine is only like a netbook

I wanted something small and easy to carry, but powerful. My other laptop is a half decent spec, but it has a 17 inch HD widescreen and is not easy to carry!

This one ticked all of the boxes, I am just transcoding a test HD video now with it, so far so good

Dell Alienware laptop

Seems they haven't changed then! Only time I've dealt with them is many years ago when I placed an order for just over 20K worth of computers for a company I was working for at the time. Dell missed the delivery date by about 4 weeks so I screwed them out of about 4K worth of extras because of it or I was cancelling the order.

Is there pricing still mis-leading? i.e cheap base price then if you want extras like a hard drive or a graphics card or even a power supply! the price trebles?

I would not say their pricing was misleading as they only show the basic model, then the price increases when you start to increase the spec. I have found dell difficult to deal with though, which all started when I purchased a Dell streak which was £389, it was impossible to install apps as there was a problem (which they must of known about ). Angie phoned them to sort it out, originally they said they would phone us back but never did and when we got around to calling them the time limit had been exceeded for sending it back and getting a full refund. Eventually they agreed to give us a full refund for it as we were going to buy another one from the Dell website that did not have the apps issues, but they tried to collect the phone without telling us they were going to collect it or before they even agreed to refund the money!

They eventually arranged to collect it and so a few days before I reordered a Dell streak and an Alienware laptop, but the next day I got an email saying it would be 1 month . This is useless to me as I need it immediately, so I emailed them via a contact form and a few days later I had no response from them. I got in from work one day and phoned them to cancel the order for the laptop and Streak, then an hour later Angie text me to say that they had phoned and were delivering the Dell Streak!

The next day (after it had been confirmed that my order had been cancelled) a delivery guy knocks at the door with a Dell Streak (I do not know if this is the one from the order that I cancelled, or if it was a replacement for the one I sent back) so I refused to accept it.

Dell never took payment for my second order of the laptop and Streak, but I will keep checking to ensure that I get the refund for the original Dell Streak.

I find it strange that at first they refused to give a refund and wanted us to send the phone back for up to 30 days, then they try and collect it without even telling us- then they send out a replacement (if it was a replacement and not part of my new order)

Angie then bought me a Streak for £199 from Tesco, so I now have a Dell Streak which works perfectly and can download apps. I also have the laptop that I wanted that Dell could not deliver for 1 month. The people that I bought the laptop from were great and I'd have no hesitation to use them again!

One thing that I don't like about Dell is the fact that they insist on installing some software on their desktop computers that is not free and there is no option to remove it from the build, so you have to pay for software that you do not want and might never use such as microsoft office starter [included in price] and McAfee security centre [included in price] There is no option to remove these from the build- which is very annoying!

The woman that I spoke to at Dell support was very helpful when I phoned to cancel the order, but I'd rather not deal with Dell again in the future if possible. I do not have a lot of time and have much better things to do than mess about chasing/cancelling orders that they cannot deliver in a reasonable time.
