I made a rose obelisk last year, handmade, heavy steel. I asked £50 for it, painted.

I notice Wilkinsons do one for £5. But thats flatpack, thinwall tube.

Getting most people to realise the quality difference is impossible.

Sorry to say, but it looks like the gnome knocked it up in about 10 minutes! I could flatten that in 1 minute without using any tools. That is why there is zero interest on ebay.

Nothing to do with cost. There are always people who will pay £700 for a bench if it is worth the price. £30 for that is far too dear.

You have an interest in woodwork. Read some books, educate yourself, then make a simple bench and notice the difference. It will inspire you to do more and you will then be able to whack something on ebay which will be bought.

Hi Fuzzy
I have tried myself selling on ebay you can do it but you have to have a quality item at a very keen price. I used to make radiator covers and shoe cupboards made to order. I sold a lot but the packaging took me just as long as to make the item.
Why dont you think of another item you could make and then come and ask the guys on here for some advise on the build. There are also thousands of free woodworking plans on tinternet.

Best thing I found was to have a look on ebay for the things that are selling that you could make and maybe do it a bit cheaper. But dont forget postage if you are only offereing collections you will cut your customer base down by around 90%.

Also if you do sell a few things put some money aside for new tools, the job becomes much more enjoyable if you have the correct tools for the job.

Keep it up.
Phil.

The key word here for me is 'keen' price on Ebay.

Very price competitive.

like i said at the beginning wine-o, it was just a punt on ebay. i never claimed that it was a top piece of craftsmanship and didn't try to sell it as such.
i certainly won't be listing one again. i can take a hint ;-)...but thanks for noticing the "rustic charm" :)

and i can take a bit of criticism Scruff, but those guys seemed to lacquer it with unnecessary sarcasm.

Graham,
RoyalOakCarpentry gave a sound piece of advice that I don't think for one moment was intended as sarcasm:
You have an interest in woodwork. Read some books, educate yourself, then make a simple bench and notice the difference. It will inspire you to do more and you will then be able to whack something on ebay which will be bought.
dave

I know Dave, that WAS fine...(i've already bought books etc.) I didn't just go into this blind.

However, this was the part that wasn't particularly friendly

I think you might be being a tad sensitive there. A bit of ribbing along with good advice keeps the forum from being boring.

A lot of other forums just give the abuse without the help :cb

You never know you might need ROCs advice one day. He's definitely in the top 50 wood butchers on here
I think I'll take two chickens...
