Start Menu
Post by caricature »
After installing the new R.A.M someone mentioned at work that you could disable a lot of programmes from running unnecessarily on start up that you don't use, they didn't know how to do it so any help would be appreciated.

Re: Start Menu
The first thing to do depends upon which version of Windows operating system you have, which one do you use?
Download and install Ccleaner
Then follow the instructions I have just posted for Scruff to follow:
post361547.html#p361547
Do NOT use msconfig to stop programs from starting as that is not what it is for.
You can look at msconfig to see what programs are listed to start, but Ccleaner will also list them. Only use Services to change the programs from Automatic to Manual or Disabled.

Re: Start Menu
Right, as there are so many that need stopping, use the Ccleaner to stop them for now.
Click each one in turn that I have listed and then click Disable.
I don't have time to go through the full list at the moment but disable these for now.
ctfmon.exe
AutostartNPSAgent
All three Epson Stylus entries. The printer can be started by double clicking it's icon on the desktop or in the Start Menu.
Google Updater
MSMSGS
OM2Monitor
swg
Do you have any children using the computer? If not disable the Parental Control. If you have children then leave it to run at startup.
OpenwaresLiveUpdate
NPSStartup unless you have a Samsung phone that you connect to the computer
nmetxth
mxomssmenu Do you have a Maxtor external hard drive connected to your computer? If not then disable. If yes, then leave it.
Reboot the computer.
Should any program that you normally have running and it is not now, go back to Ccleaner and enable it.
Will get back to you about the rest later.

Re: Start Menu
Glad to hear it.caricature wrote:Many thanks dave.m its a lot quicker starting up.
Remember if you need a program regularly at startup and it is not running, just find it in the list and enable it.
Disabling in the list does not prevent it from running when you double click an icon to start it when you need it.
