Gold Wallpaper

Post by Colour Republic »

Just a little job from yesterday

Got a call on Monday from a distressed decorator! They were having problems with a Harliquin wallpaper. They had hung the wallpaper twice and both times it had got pulled by the site manager. The paper was in the Showhouse of a Taylor Wimpy development in Surrey and they needed it sorting ASAP as the main directors were coming down to view it on the Thursday afternoon.

I very rarely do site work and I didn't really have time to do it but I could tell the guy could do with a break so I agreed to do it.

So I turn up Thursday morning to find the paper wasn't on site ::b Not a good start as it was already on a tight schedule. Couple of hours later the paper finally turned up and it was metallic which I didn't know before ::b Still I didn't think it was going to be a problem but as soon as I pasted up I knew it would be. The paper is a british pulp which expands quite a lot, but the problem comes about as the metallic print doesn't want to expand, so you end up with cupped paper and seams that don't want to lay flat.

Now I could see why they were fighting with it. On both occasions when they had tried to hang it, it was on to fresh plaster. These papers need a liner to help lock down the seams and take a hold. I had insisted that they stripped the wall and line it the day before and i'm so glad I did. It was a pain with the lining paper so God knows what it was like before. Anyway it takes a bit of patience and the clock was ticking, the site manager was floating around all the while getting nervous that it wouldn't be done in time for the directors arrival.

Anyway managed to get it done just in time! Might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I quite like it.

Seems all went well at the viewing too as I got a nice email this morning which is always welcome and makes it all worth while  .

Hi Rob,

Thanks for attending today, we had rave reviews from directors of Taylor Wimpey. Send me an invoice and I can send on immediate return.

Rob,

Job very well done and nice one for helping out a fellow deccy. Looks really good and cant do your business any harm.
What was the tape you put on the coving. Was it to protect it from paste?
Respect,
Alex.

Cheers Alex :thumbleft:

It's a low tack masking tape - Kleenedge, it is as you imagine to protect the walls and ceiling from paste, you can of course wipe the paste off but sometimes you'll leave a bit which hasn't quite come off and is only visible at certain times of the day when the light hits it, or you wash the paint too much and you end up buffing it up.

It really doesn't take any time at all and costs next to nothing, it's an insurance policy more than anything else. It stems from hanging delicate wallpapers where getting water anywhere near them stains it, meaning you can't wash walls and ceilings to rid them of paste, so now I just do it with most paper hanging :thumbleft:
