My High Speed Super Fast Broadband

Post by northwales4u »

Following on from the other thread post-your-speed-t45528.html

Here is my connection speed today (managed to get the speed test to eventually work with the net going off every few minutes).

My set up here is the BT master socket in the porch, then a wired extension (connected in the box not a plug in extension) which comes all the way round the walls (about 10m) to a telephone box behind the PC monitor where I have a filter plugged in which then goes to my BT Home Hub 2.

I have a engineer booked out for Weds afternoon. The last few times an engineer has been out (there have been a few) they have all said that I am losing 1Mb/s because of the extension lead. When I asked what lead I needed my eyes would glazed over when they come out with numbers.

In preparation for the engineer I went on ebay and bought a cable but because i wasnt really listening to the engineer I have got a 10m CAT5e (RJ45). Been thinking about it now and I have bought the wrong cable haven't I?

You really want to get your Home Hub as close to the master socket as possible and then run your CAT5e from the Home Hub to your PC.

I could do that but that would mean running an extension cable (power) from either upstairs or in the other half of the house to power it. The only two things needing broadband are the pc and xbox and at the moment I have them wired. My original 360 does have the bought wireless add on but me being old fashioned I prefer wired

Have you tried removing the front of the master socket and plugging your extension straight into the socket behind this?

When I was getting only around 0.2mbs download, I did this and now I am averaging 7mbs.

I obviously have a fault on an extension or wiring to it somewhere, but that's for another day.

So far I have moved the hub to by the master socket and run a long CAT5e to my PC and did a speedtest this morning - no change.

Just done a speedtest now and its 3Mb/s. I unscrewed the front of the master box and plugged it in (Dave's suggestion) and the speed is just the same at 3.

At least its a lot better than before but I think someone has been fiddling round at the exchange ready for the engineer appointment tomorrow

After an hour on the phone - got a new appointment 7th July. Good news though (I didnt think of this) but the lady mentioned compensation and once the problem is fixed they will work out how much it is back to when I first reported it - according to them April 2010 but I'm sure its a lot longer - bonus!

Just need BT to actually turn up now
