Setting out with a level baton - what do YOU use ?

OK, so you are about to start tiling and want to fix a baton to tile up from.
What do you use as a baton - So often a piece of timber is not straight enough and I have often wondered if there is not something better, like aluminium trim or whatever - something that is actually straight, can be cleaned off and reused easily, and cut to fit.
I sort of imagine that there must be some product on the market that has adjustable legs to allow for leveling it up accurately, maybe some sort of suction/sucker that will fix it to any surface and a replaceable straight 'top' that can be cut, cleaned and replaced as needed to allow fir different length runs.
Is there such a thing, or do you all just use any old offcut of roofing baton and sort things out as you go along ?

I generally use the floor as my batten. Having done my setting out, I mark the position of the bottom of the 2nd row of tiles round the room and measure down from that to do my cuts, using spacers and wedges as required.

I don't use batten either but come up from the floor to my lazer line.

A good option for you instead of batten would be to fix narrow tile cuts to a level line with some rapid set and then start to tile from these. Then when ready, remove tile slithers and work down to the floor.
