Tile on top of tiles

Post by satin_sheets »

Hi Guys

Some guy at work says that tiles are probably the best surface to tile onto as long as you make sure that the joints on the old tiles don't match with the ones on the new tiles! Is he winding me up or is tiling on tiles a good idea.

TIA

It can be done, there are pros and cons.

Your new tiles are relying on how well the old ones are stuck.

It limits the weight (size) of the new tiles you can fit.

It creates difficult to finish areas such as architraves around doors and window frames can become a little tight.

Out of choice I would always strip existing tiling and start from fresh knowing I had a sound substrate.

This isn't always possible to do this and is sometimes necessary to tile over tile, in which case make sure it's all clean and solid and use a suitable adhesive designed for the purpose.

A little less critical for floor tiling, the major obstacle in most cases in the increase in floor height.
