This is a difficult question (not like my last question)

Post by marktwo »

Hi,

This is a difficult question (not like my last question). I hope somebody can solve it for me:

Every time when I start my Vista, there are always two icons I don't like appearing at the bottom right colour of my screen. Can you tell me how to stop them showing up when my Vista start?

dave.m,

Thank you for response this difficult question!

I have just followed the instruction in the link you suggested but the instruction not worked for me. I guess it is because my problem is from Vista system (from a disk came with my PC), not from other software I installed.

This will get rid of all those annoying litle icons in the systray.

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then navigate down to the following key (Create if it doesn’t exist):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new 32-bit DWORD value in the right hand pane with these values:

Name: NoTrayItemsDisplay
Value: 1

You will have to logoff and back on for this to take effect....

If it is like Windows 7, in the System tray next to those icons, there will be a small arrow head pointing up, click it an dthen click Customise.
Find the icons and select 'Only show notifications' in the drop down menu for each one. Then click OK.
This will stop them showing in the systray unless they have some information for you.

The left icon in your picture is the Safely Remove icon for unplugging USB sticks etc safely after they have been used by Windows.
Not sure what the other one is but if you point at it, a popup should tell you what it indicates.

But you cannot tell him much.

Why I want to get rid of them:
The icon "Safely Remove icon" causes a lot "Devices with Removable Storage" show up when I click "Start - Computer".
The other icon I don't like is "Blocked startup programs", it may pop up a message "Windows has blocked some startup programs" from time to time.

I will try what you two suggested in a moment.

then you should keep these two as well, i believe one is for your display settings and the other one is an icon for hardware removal as dave.m said...

The icon "Safely Remove icon" causes a lot "Devices with Removable Storage" show up when I click "Start - Computer".
You must have some hardware plugged in.
The other icon I don't like is "Blocked startup programs", it may pop up a message "Windows has blocked some startup programs" from time to time.
Find out which programs Windows has blocked by clicking the icon to see what the information is.

This will remove all the icons on the desktop systray but they will re-appear if/when the program is running.
How To clear the Past Items or Icons list in the TaskBar, perform the following steps:
.
1. Start ~ Run type regedit in box ~ OK . Navigate to:
.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
.
2.Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values by right click, choose delete
.
3.Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) , click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe , and then click End Process .
.
4.In Task Manager, click File ~ New Task , type explorer.exe , and then click OK
.
It will remove all the icons ,but windows puts them back as they are used again. If yours show up again then they are in use so leave them alone.
You can always tell a Yorkshireman,
But you cannot tell him much.

Do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard? They shouldn't make it show but may do.

Have you found out what Windows prevents from starting, it could be malware and you should run a scan if it is.

Not being funny but what difference does it make to your use of the computer by having a couple of icons in the systray?
They are there for a reason and it is no good just turning them off without finding out what they are there for.

Do you think "Blocked startup programs" may still pop up a message "Windows has blocked some startup programs" bacause when start my PC Vista blocks some startup programs (Vista is in use).

No, I haven't wireless mouse nor wireless keyboard.
