Can anyone recommend a modestly priced sat nav that does full post code search, is accurate, simple to use and easily updated? my navman icn520 is way past end of life and the lack of full post code search makes it clunky and the satellite fix sometimes takes an age!!

I use the Garmin NUVI 1400 or similar number. Had it about 14 months and find it brilliant.

I paid the £100 for lifetime map updates, 4 a year.

Cost just over £200 then. Don't know if that is what you mean by moderate price?

was thinking someting sub £100 tbh what are the entry level tomtoms like? it only gets used half a dozen times or so a year at the mo but patience is slowly running out!!

Do you not have a phone? A phone that perhaps needs renewing?

I've got 4 sat navs (Garmin, TomTom, Medion and a shitty Binatone). None of them come CLOSE to the Sat Nav on my mobile phone.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S, bog standard smart phone that has Android OS - comes with free turn by turn navigation, with road names, etc. It's ALWAYS upto date as it downloads the route each time you plan a route. She's not got the nicest of voices, but then again I don't really give two hoots.

I can put shortcuts on my main page to each of my regular destinations for 1 touch access.

No extra device to leave in the car and get stolen and I've always got it with me.

It's the future, I'm sure - hence the reason TomTom have announced they are getting out of the game - they are moving to integrated models of in car and product licencing.

Just a thought, but one worth considering.

ive got an iphone 3gs at the mo, did get a sat nav for it but was really buggy and kept having to be restarted before it would pick up the gps....

BG - which is the best of the sat navs you have then (besides phone!)?

Mole,

Best standalone imo is the TomTom, followed by the Garmin very closely.

If you are going to get one, make sure:

a) it has a latest map guarantee
or
b) it has updates for X amount of years included in the price.

Wouldn't touch the cheaper ones, the XL is a big pile of dog sh*te - had no end of troubles with the two I had my hands on. Not had any recently, but in my last job, I had around 20 odd. Top advice: if it looks like a bargain - run. Run fast (RAC, unbranded, unknown, multi function (PDA/satnav)). It will have a crap interface which you don't want while on the move, rubish hardware and inferior OS behind it.

But, as I like to say: you pays you money, you takes your chances.

If I had to navigate using one of those, you'd find me in a layby starving and near death from old age.

I'll stick to tech everytime (when I'm driving.....I like to press: navigate, menu, POI, Nearst KFC....done)

Oh...while I'm thinking about it what car you got? Don't forget newer cars can have a coating on the window that buggers certain sat navs up - a 10 quid re-rediating antenna can often fix a problem you never knew you had.

thanks for the tip, tomtom looking likely.....not got a particularly mod car its a W reg seat leon so doubt it has anything fancy!!

I note there is a tradein for old sat navs on the tomtomtomtomtom website - better than a kick in the teeth.

Also....if you've got the cash, the traffic stuff is awesome. Nothing better than driving along to hear that snotty woman telling you to turn off the motorway so you don't have to spend the next 3 hours staring at someones brake lights.

The entry level tomtom is fine, I have one and it cost about £80 from Amazon. I think it is called the tomtom start?

They try and sell you speed camera and map updates for about £40 but I decided against it as I dont use the device all that often so can live with out of date maps/speed camera locations.

I have a birlliant one by Ordinance survey, sometimes i wish i could change the voice though... she doesnt like it when I shout or ignore her directions and sometimes the directions are just a tad late, but hey it works!

I've used a garmin and entry level tomtom. As well as the Tomtom app on the iphone.

They all do the exact same job.
I rarely need a satnav though, being a man I have an impeccable sense of direction

Mines a Garmin heed my advice
which ever Satnav is opted for especially those on offer buyer beware
I paid £270 for mine in a sale it was reduced by £70 after 15mths I got a message on screen telling me to update the unit,went onto Garmins site and mine was now obsolete

ok that was 3 years ago and its still working just gets lost when new roads have been built
on average if its on sale then its the end of the line for that particular unit
