Dampproofing a basement flat

Post by Hoovie »

Been a few posts about damp recently and made me think of my first place back in '86 and what I SHOULD have done..

Basement flat in a Victorian Semi, so had two exterior walls that were maybe 60% below ground. Those walls started to suffer from damp in an area maybe 4 metre long.

What would the solution be to correct this? - The builder who did the conversion supposedly injected sone kind of damp proofing in the wall, but I bouight it directly post conversion and was only there for about 18 months tops, so I doubt it worked ever.

What I DID do to "fix" it was get some textured paint over the walls where the top plaster skim came off in one room and construct a built-in wardrobe to cover up the problem in the other, then keep the windows open ready for viewings and sold up!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Tanking the cellar would be one option, but it is very expensive.

There are some new products now- membranes that are fixed to the walls with plastic fixings and then renderd over, these claim to do the trick, but again are expensive.

I moved to a first floor flat - no damp problems there .....

Until the person in the flat above let the bath overflow and the whole ceiling came down in the sitting room (this was about a week after I moved OUT to the next place, thank god!)
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
