Uneven Worktop Join

Hi all,

I have just had a kitchen work surface fitted and there is an uneven join on one of my counter tops. The join was mitred, colourfilled and bolted - but no biscuits were used.

The join/colour fill was made 7 days ago but I have only just come back to see the excess colour fill be removed and the slight raise in the join. One piece is half a milimeter higher than the other.

My question is this - is it possible to loosen the bolts, seperate the joined laminated work tops and then re-join them level?

Sorry - The reason that I am asking is that the kitchen fitter has said no, as the colour fill has bonded the work top... but I cant seem to verify that online.

Depends how much colour fill was used. It's still possible but could be a right pain to do with the worktops maybe having to come right out again along with sink and hob....

Is it like it the whole way along or just on one bit? Is it possible the worktops are cupped and if so who supplied the worktops? i.e you or the fitter?

It had about half a tube of colour fill over 2 mitre joins - the left mitre join is seamless... the right mitre join is out the whole way along. I will take a pic later and up it. It is not the material that is the issue as far as i can tell - just that one needs to be pulled half a mil to a mil lower and then re-bound.

Can you get them back, and have you paid them.

paid - mostly but not completely. No, I can't get them back but have other contacts who could help me for free if I ask right - but they are away for the week. I just want to know if it's something that can or can't be rectified by just loosening the bolts and re-aligning and sealing? If not, I guess i'll have to alert the troops upon their return.

depending on the colour of the work tops i find it easier to use clear silicone. as you dont seem to get much time to work with that colourfill stuff. plus its easier to clean off than colourfill.

are the tops 28mm or 38mm?

Must admit that colorfill seems to have a very , very short working life. Once you open the tube and put it on, you have to work like the clappers to level the joint up and tighten the dogbones. As Fin says,, I sometimes use either clear or coloured silicone (depending upon the worktop.

i did some worktops earlier this year which were etma verde colour. (green and old fashioned lol)

i couldnt get the correct colour sillicone so thats when i did my first one with clear silicone. the joins were absolutely spot on perfect. can barely see the join and cant feel em.

theres so much longer working time to play about with the join. ill probably not bother with that colourfill stuff again really. nightmare to use. goes off like the crack of a gun. only get a tiny bottle of solvent cleaner with it aswell. bit of a pisser when you knock it over

No.

I can't work out how he managed two joints using half a tube.

And am I the only one who uses biscuits?

I've always considered biscuits to be a waste of time in worktop joints, the chipboard core is just too soft for them to be of any use.
