Update....got a 2 metre hdmi lead from Sainsburys..£4.99 on offer..interestingly when you download a programme from bbc you can only do so in standard def, but on playback you get sound through the telly..

You can also choose to watch in HD..but then the pic is on the telly, but the sound is via the laptop.. or am I a complete numpty..

Click Start, and then Control Panel. Select the Hardware and Sound category.
Click Manage audio devices, listed under the heading Sound. In the window that opens, a number of devices may be listed under Playback.
Among the listed devices, select the device described with HDMI or Digital Audio, and click Set Default. A green tick mark should show that this device is now the selected output device. Click OK to confirm and close the window.

:dunno: Using windows 7, doesn't give the same options as you have quoted..had a play around in control panel but can't find anything specific re: Hdmi, except to say it's working normally..

Downloading using iPlayer desktop, or streaming the programme shouldn't make any difference to whether the sound comes out the laptop, or the TV. Take a look in control panel and the system tray for an application related to your sound card. See if there's anything related to sound over HDMI.

You can download programmes in HD, but sometimes the option appears a few days after the SD programme is online. I have my media center PC connected to the TV via HDMI and get sound and video on the TV, so it is possible.

same here, in control panel if you click sound there may be a hdmi device in the playback list...
I know it sounds silly but have you tried booting up the laptop with the hdmi port already connected?

Strangely this happened to me when I was watching Treasure Island on Sky Player. I-Player works fine but I just could not get the sound through the telly and resorted to listening through the laptop speakers. I do not use Sky player much so it is not an issue for me but I thought I would flag it up on this thread.

No. I had downloaded 2 episodes of merlin...next time I opened I-Player it started downloading the whole series....

Stopped it...then next time I opened I-player..it started downloading the whole series...!!

As I only have a 40GB allowance each month..thought better of it and uninstalled it..
