quick worktop question.

will be fitting worktops tomorrow on a small kitchen job. the coustomer has gone for beach block effect worktops. they have a square edge rather than the rounded post formed edge thats on any other worktop ive fitted before. and chipboard rather than solid wood.

the worktops have been supplied by howdens just incase any of you lot have fitted em before.

just wondering if i still need to masons mitre them or if its better to butt join them as is the case with propper beach tops.

but join and a round over chamfer or whatever design they fancy on exposed edges remembering to mold any edges that will be near to a wall or cabinet before installation dosn't have to be the whole length just the bits you cant get to when installed

Always a mason mitre for me, you'll get a slight indentation from the edge with the laminate on it!

actually ive just answered my own question. yes itd need a mason mitre as theres a slight chamfer on the front edge. whereas the propper tops would be a square edge.

You really want to do a 10mm mitre with wooden tops and not the 23mm used on laminate tops, if your jig allows for it.

do not take router to laminate worktop to shape the edge

lol... i realised you had misunderstood big all haha. as stated ive fitted many tops. just not one like this. just ws after advice is all.

ok these tops are laminate. they are made from chipboard same as standard tops. but when i first looked at em i thought it was a fully square edge. but upon looking again i realised theres a slight chamfer at the top. therefore id guess probably best just with a normal masons mitre.

my jig is the big one that trend make. so it maybe does allow to cut a smaller mitre?? never looked into it before. ill have to dig out the instructions etc.

I read it wrong too. As it's laminate you need the proper 23mm mitre anyway.

when ever i do square i put a 10mm mason in, but you have to have a jig that has the two hole pin positions.

well ill be looking into it tomorrow anyway as had a bit of a disaster today with half the stuff being wrong and base decor ends that were missing all together. got pretty much ready to go but didnt wanna start work tops at quarter past 3.

I take it it wasn't only the worktops that came (or didn't) from Howdens

but they decided to send 2 decor base ends. great i thought. theres one for either end of the kitchen where the appliances will be (washer and dishwasher)

and since my boss (aka dad) has been on my case to get the worktops fitted. he does this every bloody time. even when theres no units in hes like lets get the worktops fitted. it drives me crazy. i never checked how many decor wall ends there was. theres 4. so i was 3 short of base decor ends. so the kitchen now has to be adjusted to suit. its my fault for the decor ends i supose. i should have checked. but being hastled to get finished is annoying. especially when the stuff isnt on the job. and i only started fitting the units this morning. i like fitting kitchens when i can work with someone else haha

You butt joint them but take off the laminate edging (so you are butting up chipboard to chipboard). There is no profile to them, mate. The laminate edge strip is the profile as this leaves a slight shamfer where it meets the top surface.

Same rule for these as for solid square edged tops.

Even on a solid top with a profiled edge you only take off the profile and butt joint. Quality tops will have the profiles applied after.

ok. as i said ive never come across these type of work tops before.

so ive got 2 worktops where i normally would put a masons mitre onto them. but this time i have to peel back the lam edge strip. how would i go about this neatly? maybe a daft question but im not too sure tbh. sharp chisel and take my time? or trial and error with my jig and like a sacrificial strip between the work top and the jig pegs? at say 20mm thick on the female part of the join. just so the router removes the laminate. and not the rest of the top.

obv theres gonna need to be a small angled cut so the 2 worktop edges meet precisely. i could i guess use the hand plane for the male part.

When you say square edged, do you really mean square edged or a shallow pencil profile

Also as you said it was from Howdens, what size are they? as I think Howdens only do square edged laminate worktops in 50mm
