Tiling over a part screed and part parquet flooring area

Post by donmaico »

Hi i am a bit of a quandary because I bought some marble floor tiles I wanted to lay in place of a lino covered piece plywood which I noticed was very wet round the toilet and sink area.At first I thought the whole floor area would be screeded, as it was round the toilet and sink, but as I proceeded to remove the ply discovered half is pine parquet. The question is what should I do ? Without the ply the height is just right for tiling as that would mean the tiles would be the same height as the flooring in the adjacent hallway.Either i tile over the whole lot or remove the parquet flooring and replace with further screed before tiling.Presumably the whole lot would have to dry before laying.Another option I thought of was returning the tiles to the supplier(wickes) and laying some kardean , which I think is much thinner, over a fresh piece of plywood.Maybe that might be the best option ad th screeded area is taking an age to dry
Another thing, should I decide to remove the pine parquet flooring presumably I would need to remove the bituminous adhesive as well. How could I do that?
I would welcome any advice ,thank you

You need to resolve the wet issue first. Is it badly aimed wee and slopping basin water or a leak?

Speaking from experience, I am not an expert in this area, I would say that if you want to go down the tile approach then you probably need to get the parquet up and then go over it with a self levelling compound. If you cover with Karndean, which I think is great flooring, then ply would do as long as the floor is sound and dry.

Hope this helps

Many thanks :thumbright:
I think it must have been a leak because its all round the toilet and adjacent sink area.I noticed the nut which tightens the pipe connecting toilet to cistern was rather loose at the cistern end so i tightened that and i cannot see any more leakage. The toilet itself is rather loose on the floor as well but i dried it where it meets the waste pipe in the floor.
Self levelling compound might be ok provided it can be laid at the thickness of the parquet flooring , dries in good time and will adhere to the bituminous layer
