Need to replace this plasterboard?

Hi there. I've ripped out an existing self contained plastic shower enclosure/tray and want to install another, but this time with tiled walls. The walls look like this:

Should I replace the plasterboard? If not, what should I be doing to it? I'm a bit twitchy about reusing it because it'll be a wet area.

Are you planning to re tile over the top it will be fine as the tiles will seal the wall stopping the water penetrating through or you could have it re skimmed aslong as the board isn't wet

Sadly not true inspire. Grout is water resistant not waterproof. Over time the plasterboard can become damaged for constant small amounts of water penetration. Always better to tank wet areas that are to be tiled. Many ways to do this but one of the easiest and cheapest is with a paint on solution like mapegum or BAL WP1.

Personally I'd replace the plasterboard an then tank. But to be fair those walls aren't in that bad condition so could be repaired then tanked before tiling

You will have weight limits per m2 for those boards....

So what size/type off tile are you fixing....

Me...I would strip it and either moisture resistant plasterboard with homelux wall matting(no need to wait 24hrs)....or 12.5mm hardie backer boards,fiba tape the joints tile away...

mr p/boards- 20kg per m2

Hardie boards-40kg +per m2...

Do it right first time and it will/should last a good few years,tile fixing is all in the perpetration,and using good materials...

Haven't investigated tiles yet. Would like large ones. Do they vary in weight much? Just looked at a couple of tile websites and weight wasn't listed in the specs. If I went for MR boards (rather than Hardie), would I be restricting myself to the range of tiles I could use?

Hardie boards-40kg +per m2...

Tiles vary in size and weight....

So either yourself or the boss...go and pick a tile you like....

Boxes off tiles usually come with the weight on the side with the m2 on the side also....

Some porcelain need sealed before and after grout and stone tiles...travertine/marble/mosaic ect..ect..
Will need sealed...before fixing/grouting....

So pick your tiles,then come back on,and will be able to advise further Newbarker..re:wall preperation and adhesives/grouts/sealers ect...
