Tiling Cost

Just had a quote for a bathroom makeover and am a bit concerned with the tiling costs. Have chosen the tiles and the cost of these comes to exactly £1000. Fair enough. But it is the cost of actually tiling the bathroom that is getting to me. The room is 1.7m square, the walls completely bare and the tiler has said that there is nothing to do in the way of preparation. So, 4 bare walls with a door in one and a window in another. Apart from the mixer shower the pipes of which come through the wall, the hot and cold pipes for the bath and sink and the drains for these and for the toilet enter and exit through the floor. I should add that there is no bath, sink or toilet in the room at the moment.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of an acceptable cost for tiling this bathroom?

Well if you have paid £1000 for tiles ,you are going to want a top quality job done and that is a little more expensive,as it could mean an extra day or so on job,there are tilers and there are tilers and the results can be quite different,do not think it is just a case of get a few quotes,recommendations here are so important ,get some from your tile suppliers, family,friends and neighbours
prices vary from area to area also
Pick your tiler and haggle and hopefully you will agree a price that suits your pocket and quality of work expected

He quoted £1800 and said it would take no more than 2 days. :dunno:

That includes the tiles I hope,he has addy,grout,trims on top,so if quality tiler ,two long days,not far out

3 day job as far as I'm concerned. Approx 15m2 of, I assume, natural stone. All needs wet cutting, reveals, header and cill to cut to, trims to fit, sealing, grouting, siliconing. I wouldn't want to cram that into 2 days. Where in the country are are you mate?

£1000 for tiles?? are we looking at marble/porcelain ? ? something a bit heavier than ceramic for sure...

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. The total cost of the job is £2800, (£1000 for the tiles which are ceramic + £1800 for the actual tiling). Just phoned the guy and asked the price of the individual tiles and he replied that this doesn't matter since it the total cost is what counts. :dunno:

Could I get a quick reply on this please?

Given that he's told you it'll take 2 days he's on about £850.00 a day after material costs. While we're at it, how come you're paying £60+ per m2 for ceramics?

Sorry guys, tiler just called to say he made an error in the estimate. The total cost is £1800 which includes £800 for the actual tiles. Will still wait to see what the other installer comes up with in his estimate.

nobody makes a mistake of £1,000 on a job that big. If the job was £30k then I could undrstand.

on the room size you gave that works out at 16sqm, his price for labour £1,000 that's £62sqm for labour. Even if that £62sqm included addy and grout it's still expensive unless there is something special about them or you are having design work done.

As a guide £25sqm labour for ceramics rising to £45sqm labour for natural stone. I'm sure you'd find someone willing to do it for much less than that but becareful of who you employ. As said above, there are tilers and then there are TILERS!

New estimate is £750 for tiles + £675 for tiling to be paid after the job is done to my satisfaction. The new bathroom installer comes well recommended and the tiler has given me a list of addresses of previous costomers. Two live nearby and taking White Pan Man's advice I paid both a visit. Both think the guy is brilliant and although I am no expert, I was very impressed at the standard of workmanship. Gave the guy the go-ahead but the other tiler is none too happy.

firm i knew was a minimum of £45- £75 m2 for natural stone,
so his actually cheaper than one firm (this firm had a few employees too).
