it's great to find that one special person that you want to annoy for the rest of your life
I have a soft spot for the wife, it's a peat bog just outside Ardross

Re: hdmi to vga lead
Most converters UPSCALE to HDMI so getting the HDMI output from the XBox to go DOWNSCALE into a VGA monitor will be either difficult or expensive. Best way is to use the AV output. Converters for AV-VGA are available but when compared to the price of a 'cheap' TV/PC-type monitor there's really no choice.
Treat the wee fella to a new TV/monitor combo but ensure the TV really does accept an AV input (most do).
Smaller sets can be found for under £80 - trawl eBay for used sets or even try freecycle in your area.
