When is 14" not 14"

Post by Mooncat »

When it's relating to chainsaws! Needed a new chain for my Skil 14" electric saw, tried to sharpen it but all I managed was a blunt file! To town for a chain, but garden machine shop closed, found a 14" chain at B n Q. Euphoria didn't last, teeth are right size and shape, but not enough of them! Grrr. At least they will accept a return, but no sawing until Monday now.
I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.

Sharpening a chainsaw chain is fairly easy once you know 'how' and it's easier still if someone shows you!

You can purchase a tool that holds the rat tail file in exactly the correct position for chain sharpening - plus you need a rat tailed file of the correct diameter....

Most chains are sized based on the number of teeth on the driving wheel rather than the length of the bar.
Don't take it personally......

Mmmm, some personal tuition might come in useful. On Monday, I'll go to the garden machine dealer and see what he has.

Moony,
Sharpening chains is easy mate as Kelly says, I always give it a rub before each use so I'm used to the angle.

My wood-chopper, a Stubai side-axe, is in fine fettle! The woman in the shop wrapped up my chopper so I could carry it through town without causing offence!

Took my old chain in to the garden machine shop, he promounced it repairable so I left it with him to sharpen, and it looks good now. Will try it out tomorrow on some leylandii.

No chance, unless it's double-acting, slide valve, with Stephenson link motion, I'll stay with electric motors.

Too true, especially cutting the below ground parts, and the splitting is tougher as well. But they are all down now. Good riddance to evil Leylandii!
