looks cheap, i hope not, but i suspect it is just another bulk packaged value product, not the same quality as individual makita products would love to see if anyone has one of these that can comment on quality

Sadly i did not buy it in the end otherwise I would comment. I think the offer may also have ended now as well.
It would be good to know though as I have a Makita drill and it has been great.

I got one of those years ago thrown in with a drill from somewhere.
The quality is ok for an occasional diyer as there is quite a range of bits but tradespeople would soon wear the most used sizes out and throw the rest somewhere in the garage.
I wouldn't go for it personally.

Re: Makita Accessory Kit 252 Piece Set for £49.99 at Screwfi
I, too, bought a similar Makita set about 5 or 6 years back (at £40 or so back then). I have to say that it was very handy having almost everything in a single, easily transported box, but the contents weren't the best quality. I quickly went through the more common screwdriver bits (too many Phillips, not enough PZDs IMHO) and started to replace the more common sizes with good quality ones (Wera, Wiha, etc), next things to go were the twist drills and once again I started to replace carbon steel drills with M2 HSS ones from Dormer. And so it went on with more and more stuff being replaced as it either wore out or broke. I never really used the masonry bits because I've been using an SDS since the early 80s whilst the hex drive sockets I still have because they are occassionally useful. The spade bits were a rather odd selection to my mind and soon required resharpening, but still I persevered. The end came when the flimsy plastic hinges gave up the ghost after about 2-1/2 years At that point I opted not to replace the set although I do miss the convenience of the container the set came in. My own feeling is that one of these sets would keep a DIYer going for a long, long time (possibly half a lifetine) and might still be useful as a backup for someone in the trades, but the quality of the contents is less than stellar. Having also bought a couple of smaller Ryobi sets as get me out of a hole kits in the past I'd have to say the Makitas are no better, no worse. Perhaps this "review" is damning by faint praise, but on the up side there have been times when I've needed a one-off bit (e.g. a Roberts square drive #3 or a Torx #25) and it's been there in the kit - saving me a lot of additional effort/aggro. Pity the quality isn't any better

Thanks for the advice both of you!
I think for me then it might be a good buy as an occasional diy item.
Job, do you remember if it had a torx #50, as I need one for the Landrover?

I'm pretty sure that it only went up to T40, which is about as big as you normally go on 1/4in hex drive. It's still in the back of my lockie so I'll take a look next time I'm there over the weekend and let you knownick200 wrote:do you remember if it had a torx #50, as I need one for the Landrover?

Cheers Job
To be honest I may need it on a 1/2 inch to get the b*gger out but it would be good to know what it goes up to.
