Post by Bradley's Gas »

Hello im looking to buy or maybe build a gaming PC that's able to run games like Call of Duty and Battlefield 3 on a good high setting. I would like to spend around £600. Any Replies will be much appreciated. :thumbleft:

Hi and welcome :welcomeuhm:

I'd check ebay to be honest as there are some good ready built deals on there, like this one- http://bit.ly/LFPUjT

Or a slightly better spec one for just under your budget- http://bit.ly/MCTcTc

Just make certain that you check out the sellers feedback before buying from ebay :thumbright:

sorry i was unavailable last night so i didn't see your post.

as far as gaming challenges go, i've ran leagues for this sort of thing and learnt about 10 years ago that the older you get the less you can compete with younger ones. basically i got my ass kicked by my 5 year old nephew back then which made me realise i wasn't top of the gaming rankings any more.

yes i play BF3 but in all honesty, i just can't be bothered with clans any more. i don't even bother going into public servers any more because i don't want to get dragged into spending 40-80 hours a week gaming again.

as for a gaming rig, the worst news is what will hurt you but in the fairest way. the old saying "you've got to be cruel to be kind" is the only line you can use when talking about gaming pc's.

i agree that for the money your best option is an old gaming rig from ebay but then i would spend 2-3 weeks looking at them before you buy. this way you get to know what is on offer, ask us what we think and then know what sort of price is fair. look for ones being listed at the wrong times as well, i.e finishing while people are at work or asleep. 4.45-4.55pm is a good time during the week and anything after 11.30pm is also good for bargains.

if you want to build the rig, we can also help you do that.

now for the home truths: -

to play games like BF3, you need a really decent rig, most old ones will not touch the game. you say you have £600 for the whole thing but the amount you will need to spend on a graphics card alone will take more than 50% of that. i'll give you an idea: -

CPU - you will need something like an i7 920 upwards (i bought mine off ebay for £150 back then)

RAM - 8-12Gig and it needs to be decent stuff (my ram cost me £500 for 12 gig when i bought it)

Hard drive - i use a Cruicial M4 256G SSD for my OS as the read/write times are so much faster than a normal HDD ( around £150 now but cost me nearly £300 when i bought it)

Graphics card - this needs to be a meaty piece of kit. mine is now old but still kicks ass well, it's an MSi ATi 6970 twin frozzer (cost me just under £400 when i bought it)

Monitor - needs to be a decent one with low response time etc or you will get a ghosting on fast gameplay at high end graphics settings (you should be able to get a decent enough one for around £150-£250)

that lot needs a decent enough Mobo to run it all off and then on top of that you must have a PSU that will handle it all. again, a bit outdated now but probably still about 3x more powerful than the average, i have a Tagan Piperock 1300W PSU.

Sound - now with gaming, sound is a crucial part of it, if you play you want to know when you are being approached, a fantastic set of headphones can cost you in the regions of £150-£350 (tried some awesome ones at the Gadget show live NEC last April, nearly bought them but missus looked at me when he said they were £350 :cb )
you could always get a really decent set of 7.1 speakers with a great Sub - Logitek do a really good one but be warned, it annoys other people including neighbours...... click, throw a nade, boom boom shake the room

the mistake many make which you will also find on Ebay, is that a lot of people think that if they buy 2 out of the 5 main pieces they need for an awesome gaming rig it will be better. that isn't true as the weakest part is as well as it will perform. if you have the best ram and a crap graphics card the game will stutter. if your internet is slow you will lag. everything needs tuning together and in the nicest possible way...today's game such as BF3 are so demanding you find the reason people are selling their rigs on Ebay is because they can't handle today's games and they are upgrading.

£600 simply isn't going to get you very far. you would still beat me gaming wise though because it is a long time since i had to "lag shoot". that means knowing you are not where i see you because your pc doesn't react the speed mine will and you have to shoot and compensate for that.

the ones from Argos, forget it, they are meant for people that don't have a clue and just want to do a but of word processing with net surfing, get an iPad instead. your best option is as Chez has listed. in the nicest possible way though, they are bottom end rigs because of the price. they will play the game but you will struggle if you try to set the graphics high. the ram is low end, the chip is basic and the graphics card is quite an old one, the psu, i am surprised they put such a low end one in. all that said though, it's only £600 so that is why.

btw :welcomeuhm:

Mine is still a fairly high end machine as it has the I7 processor, but could be improved by spending more on a graphics card or even two graphics cards in a crossfire configuration.

For what I need may machine is fine as it can edit and convert HD video footage etc.

I'll keep my current machine for a while longer (perhaps a couple of years) then I might build another using an SSD for the main boot drive and do a brand new install of windows.

I have no idea how this machine would peform for gaming as I never play games :dunno:

Thinking about it, now might be a good time to build a new one

Chez, video editing doesn't hammer a card like a game so the chances are no it wouldn't but as you don't play them..it don't matter

xbox or ps3 is by far your cheapest option. no matter what people say though, they do not compare to a high end pc, it is a physical impossibility.

leagues for SOF and CSS but stopped ages ago. i gave up when i was running free leagues that competed with a new league offering a £10K prize. took the fun out of the game and sponsors were a pain in the ars3.

regarding your pc again, why not use ebay for the parts individually. keep looking for bargains and then after a few weeks you might actually have bought enough of the bits at knock down prices to make one rather than looking for one complete. we can easily explain to you how to build it, or you buy one already running and just change the parts for ones that will play your games.
