Problem with downloads
I have recently had a problem with reading PDF's and it is baffling me. What happens is that linking to a PDF causes Explorer to fall over and it seems to go into a loop of trying to recover the tab and then falls over. I cleared all temp files, uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader and even tried a safe site with AVG turned off. The strange thing is that it happens on my Laptop with IE8 and my PC with IE9 in exactly the same way.
The odd thing is that it works on some occasions and not others. I was looking at Rightmove and linked to the full brochures (PDF) and it failed and then a little while after they worked.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Problem with downloads
If you have a PDF on your computer can you open it directly? Like in downloads or from the desktop?
More than likely guess it's an extention/add-on/whatever gone bad (not like CSI or anything...).
To check.....
Start > Programs > Accessores > system tools > IE (no-addons)
Or, if that is not there, try:
start > Run > iexplorer -extoff
If you got it right, this should open:
If it works, let us know :)

Re: Problem with downloads
I did that and it showed the screen confirming no add-ons. It does not seem to have changed anything?
I was trying to download four separate e-mail JPEG pics from my mailbox to my picture files. I had to delete my temp internet files every time and then it would 0work once. It seems that the process is not clearing the work area properly each time?
This is very strange

Re: Problem with downloads
After you get this screen, you should just use it as normal and try to download somthing that does not work......Once you close it, it returns to normal. It's a way of trouble shooting the add-on's.dewaltdisney wrote:I did that and it showed the screen confirming no add-ons. It does not seem to have changed anything?

Re: Problem with downloads
I would try an Internet Explorer reset, to do this from within IE9, click the cog at the top right, then select "Internet Options" then the "Advanced" tab. Down towards the bottom right there will be a "Reset" button. Click this.
Then download and run C Cleaner from here and perform a clean.
You could also try creating a new user account and logging on as this and seeing if you still have the problem, as it may be something in your user profile that is corrupt.

Re: Problem with downloads
Hi Rich,
I uninstalled Adobe Reader and installed Foxit. Still getting the same problem the message that comes up is headed as a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, the message is ' Runtime error Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Does that give you a clue?

Re: Problem with downloads
In IE, go to tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab. Depending on your version of IE, if you don't see the Tools menu press the Alt key.
Near the bottom click the Reset button.
Leave your personal settings and reset.
Restart IE and try again.

Re: Problem with downloads
A mate had this last year running winxp and only uses Microsoft IE
can't remember all the steps we tried but
I d/l an alternative to reader and it worked on pdf files (also I used firefox which worked fine)
so then uninstalled Ie 7 /adobe reader (maybe flash or java)
and installed Ie8 or 9 latest adobe reader
seemed to work if I remember rightly

Re: Problem with downloads
No luck with that Richie. The strange thing is that it is happening on my PC as well as my lappy and the PC is running IE9. I cannot download any e-mail attachments now it goes to the tab showing the paper flying from world to file but nothing happens.
I must have a bug in there but nothing is showing up on my virus scan
Hmmm

No, I must admit I am reluctant to make a big change like that. Do you think it is the only way?
