18 odd month later Update on AEG drill driver and Combi

So back here aeg-bsb18g-and-bs18g-t38905.html

I did a quick review of these 2 drills. Happy to say despite extensive and frequent heavy DIY usage both are still going strong. Combi will even put 6x80mm Goldscrew plus screws into wood without a pilot hole with no problem (hammer mode and a wera PZ bit helps a lot)

Only minor niggle was the chuck on the Combi not wanting to undo a PZ3 bit, however quick squirt of WD-40 and a bit of brute force, then a further squirt of lubricant with a few loosens and tightens and issue solved.

In the interim bought an AEG toolbox / drill/screwdriver combo box to keep them, the batteries and the charger in. Drill bits are fine....screwdriver bits are tolerable. the 50mm PZ2 bit sheared the teeth on the head, think its getting replaced with a wera extra tough or similar when funds allow.

So for £120, they were well worth the purchase and good enough to convince my dad to trade up from the cheap shed/supermarket stuff he used to use (leant them to him to fix a floor the plumbers had left in a right state and some other odd jobs....his comment afterwards "I seriously need to buy a better drill", whereas prior the line was "a drill is a drill") So as part of his Xmas, my mum bought him a pair of combis on offer at the local ironmongers, only diff is the batteries are ni-cad not Li-ion and the charger he has is a 1 hour not a 30 minute model.

To put it mildly these drills have been worked hard and never had any issue, on the lookout for an impact driver at some point, for that extra oomph (155nm vs 47nm), shame AEG don't do a 1/2 drive impact wrench...would come in handy sometimes...

Also both drills are well balanced and light enough not to kill your shoulders too quickly while working above head height.

AEG also have upgraded the batteries they supply, though the new are compatible with the old as they both use the global battery system. (I think milwaukee use the same system though I don't have a milwaukee battery to try, though the layout looks the same)

For those wanting something seriously HD, AEG also do a full metal chuck combi with something like 70 or 80 nm of torque.

That charger looks like mine, but red and black, not orange and black and with stickers in different locations but with the same graphics, also the battery looks very similar to mine,
Anyone have a broken 18V milwaukee battery they no longer want? If so I can see if it will fit.

The first poster in that thread though has spammed his comments liberally on a few forums, from his recommendation of B&D.....I get the feeling "USA, USA, USA, USA" gets yelled a lot in his house....

On a side note, I noticed Ridgid tools in the USA are the same as the AEG drills here...so whether AEG in the USA are different or not in spec...not sure. Do know Australian AEG tools are the same spec as those sold here in terms of quality and seem to be well respected by tradies, especially at their pricepoint and also with the deals AEG were running a while back in Australia to build market share.

Saw an AEG multi-tool in B&Q the other day. Interchangable heads with the Bosch/Fein multi head, a jigsaw head and and drill head. Looked quite good.

Actually B-A Milwaujee are from the same "stable" as Ryobi and AED - TTI. AEG has developed a number of tools for Milwaukee over the last 25 or more years, especially the cordless tools (AEG Winnenden is a very well regarded developer of high performance motors for use in cordless tools), which is why there is some cross-compatibility. Milwaukee also looked to AEG to design and supply their jigsaws and SDS drills, too. Milwaukee took-over the Kango brand and designs (which were the result of the short-lived Atlas-Copco ownership of AEG, Milwaukee and Kango-Wolf) which is why these days there is a ilwaukee Hango 950 model.....

It might get yelled, but virtually all "American" brands are now manufactured abroad - Milwaukee and Porter-Cable in China and deWalt in Mexico, for example. Oddly Bosch, Makita and Hitachi manufacture parts of their ranges in the USA.....

Oooooh. Is that so? Some of their tools they've sourced from Bosch in the past (their laminate trimmer until 18 momnths or so back was a bosch GKF600/Colt, only made in China - ours are Indonesian or Malaysian here). Rigid do make some of their own stuff but they buy-in and rebadge a lot, too IMHO

Job: Might just be the one cordless, but I saw one on ebay that was identical to my AEG combi, down to the charger, apart from having Ridgid stamped on the side rather than AEG....

My AEG cordless has "made in Germany" on the label and feels well made, though the motor brake is better on dads combi, comes to a stop more smoothly than mine, though could just be the slightly weaker output from the ni-cads compared to the li cells

I wouldn't touch an AEG from BnPoo though, got burned after buying a ryobi jigsaw from there on offer once, cuts about as straight as a drunken skunk due to the weak spring loaded blade holder......the old mans powerdevil jigsaw cuts way straighter and its a cheap screwfix POS. Also the Ryobi jigsaw has "imported for BnPoo" on the label....says it all really....

Like the video....wonder where they got the drill bits though, as they seem to go through stuff way easier in the video.....

Yes, There's good and bad in every range. having tried one I would have a Milwaukee jigsaw if it were given - it's a warmed over AEG design from the late 1980s which never was up to the Bosch standard. The Milwaukee big SDS drills (3kg and bigger), though, are excellent - although considering that there is still a lot of the original Kango design in there so they should be! Bosch is just the same; they've rarely sold me a lemon, but I have had a few over the years
