pvc cladding for bathroom, anyone used it?

I thought this would be the best forum to post this in.

My WC and bathroom are in need of tiling and I have been told about pvc cladding you can use. I seen some online but it looks quite thin and weak. Anyone used this? I ultimately hate tiling as my tiling goes pear shaped after a few rows! So thought cladding looks better and easier but I might be wrong...

Plus I cant seem to find any local stores that sell it :|

in my opinion pvc cladding is not an option other than away from areas from vertical water and spray ok for outside horizontally as it will shed water
you need to waterproof the area properly it cannot be done on the cheap it needs to be done properly

i dont understand what you mean?

you mean the walls it will go on to need to be waterproofed? Surely it would be ok if the cladding is put on tightly without gaps and sealed where needs be?

ok in my opinion plastic cladding is not an option you really need tiles properly affixed but wait for others oppinions

Hi noddy,

if it's the whole bathroom, the cladding would look horrid.

If it's a small area (I.E around a shower) - look at waterproof panels. A lot of our customers are installing these as opposed to tiles, take 10 minutes to fit and you've got a waterproof wall :)

Good brand for these is bushboard.

I've used both....

PVC cladding is 'OK' but it dents and marks VERY easily. I'd imagine if you fell in the shower and hit the wall, it would be ruined. Like Matt said too, it would look shite if you done your whole room in it....

(I know the plasterboard underneith is not tanked/etc......we took some of that outside and fired a hose at the joints - not a drip came through!!!!! We also used silicone between the joints too......it's more likely to be replaced from impact damage than water).

My house, I used Bushboard.....it's a very sturdy product and nice too, but I had a problem with the pattern - it wouldn't match. I'm not sure if it was a batch issue or what, but poor show......didn't have time to ring and replace either. We managed to put the joints exactly where the shower cubicle was going, so there are only bits you can see.

There are cheaper versions though, if you want plain or basic patterned....

(Excuse finger prints, had just gone up.....the 'joint' line was the black jointing silicone and was trimmed off later so you can't see it).

I'd go with a board one, everytime. If there are corners, make sure you can get the internal and external miters too!!

Thanks for the offer, but it's all installed now, so a bit late to do anything really.

Went with BB as it had a bit more of a premium feel to it, plus the wife loved the pattern. I was surprised. Three boards delivered, all brand new and perfect condition. We had the ones that are T&G, so only go one way - but the pattern just wouldn't match up any order. It was really odd.

Worth keeping an eye out though if you get any in for custards though.

When I come to re-do the bathroom, I'm going to go with a plain black pattern.....my brain can't take much of that! lol

Not sure if this makes sense, but you can see three of the tops of the boards here.....looks like the print should be different at one side OR there should be a different kind of middle board:

yeah I can see what you mean BG, it isn't too bad but bit annoying none-the-less.

We've got that black one you posted earlier up in our showroom as well as a feature strip behind a basin... looks pretty cool.

Oh cheers. I know what you mean about the pattern I wouldnt go for a pattern anyway would go for a plain or glossy plain type.

Do you silicone between where each board meets?

As for the mitre of internal and external corners, cant you get internal/external corner strips?

Edit: It is for the whole bathroom minus the ceiling and floor. I have had a look at bushboard they are bloody pricey!!

There is a type of adhesive they tell you to use for each make or they can make waves if there is a warrenty issue.

You CAN get corner strips, that's what I (badly) tried to say - some of the cheaper boards don't make them, or they look crap.

When you price it up, consider this:

1. It looks GREAT
2. It's EASY to clean
3. No maintenance
4. No Yellowing grout
5. It's easy to install
6. When you compare the prices, take into account that you don't need: Tanking for the shower areas, grout, adhesive, amazing amount of skill to tile it so it looks nice, plasterboard underneith.....

I'm going back on my tiled en-suite to use this board, it's worth every penny.

What he said...I've used a different brand (Aquamura) in showers and bathrooms, you can normally negotiate a bit of discount (20-25%) if ordered via a building merchant...no mucky grout, easier to install than tiling...and depending on the price/quality of the tiles can easily work out cheaper...

Any stores you can go into to buy/see? I am not a fan of ordering materials online waiting a day or more in worst case scenarios. Say if you ruin a board and need another you cant finish in time as you gotta wait for the courier...
