Post by wally1945 »

I have The HP Compaq dx2250 Microtower Business PC , with amd - athlon 64x2 3.0ghz processor.
Can i install win 7 x 64 bit on it or would it be best to install the 32 bit version.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Loads of variables!

Some would say go for 64-bit to keep ahead of the game (future-proof) and if 64-bit costs the same as 32-bit then why not? Your machine is designed for it!

But it really depends on what you DO with the software you run on your PC. Are you prepared to pay extra for a 64-bit version of 'Word' (for example) when you wouldn't even be able to see any performance difference between the 64 and 32-bit versions? :dunno:

Are 64-bit versions available? Does the 'main' software you run work on a 32-bit platform (they 'say' it's backwards compatible but then again they used to say that about DOS software running on Windows machines - I'm going back a good few years to illustrate my point here but it's still valid).

IMHO there are only a few PC users that actually require a 64-bit platform/OS as most peoples software requirements don't extend this far. I've used XP for the last 5(?) years (feels like more) and never had cause to NEED a faster (i.e. more powerful machine). But, then again, I don't run high-end graphic/processor intensive software (CAD, 3D rendering etc).

The PC and software manufacturers have a vested interest in pushing the boundaries of performance (i.e. income stream) therefore will do anything to 'force' PC users to upgrade.

I'm of the old school that uses a PC until it fails to meet my PERSONAL requirements in performance which also means running software that can be considered 'old' but, as far as I'm concerned, offers me no more nor less than what I require of it. As a result, the PC I got 5 years ago still does what *I* want of it and I'm not at the mercy of the software/hardware 'pushers'.

No doubt those same people are thinking desperately of a method to make ALL PC's obsolete as that would be their financial utopia!

:hello2: kellys-eye:- your :welcome:
thank you for that, i was only thinking of 64bit, as it runs larger ram amounts,
have checked max ram on this model, it is only 2gb,
so i will take on board your advice,
and stick with 32 bit as you say, as i only use the pc low end so it will be best.
Again thanks.

Always go for 64, even if you're running 32 bit software.

If for nothing else just being able to support more than about 3gb of ram, and future proofing.
You can run 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS but you can't run a 64 bit program on a 32 bit OS.

Like I said, nothing wrong with future-proofing and, if you purchase a new machine 'today' you're as likely to get a 64-bit processor as not.

Most of my PCs still run 1Gb with only one running 2Gb of RAM and there's STILL nothing I own (or can think I would possibly own software-wise) that would require more than 2Gb.

I'm a luddite really

Hi Megaross thanks, crucial.com say the pc will only upgrade to 2gb of ram, maybe this is just for
the 32 bit, will try the 64bit and see how i get on, will get back and let you know how i get on.

Wheras I think 4gb is sort of minimum if you're running windows 7.
I'm running 32gb on my home machine and some of my simulations take up every last bit and have my dual sandybridge xeons pumping out more hot air than an industrial radiator

My work pc runs 4gb on 32bit xp and it's ok but if I tried to do any heavy work on it, it'd probably give me the finger, get up and leave the office. Heaviest stuff I do at work is photoshopping and quark, it does struggle with some of the bigger tiffs and things.

If you're just doing office stuff on xp though 2gb is probably more than adequate.

Just to butt in, there is a Windows 7 tool designed to test the spec of any pc before you fully install it, to see if your pc can handle it.
HERE
